TV Died, Replacement Suggestions?
My trusty old 36" Sony died, guess I need to join the modern age and get a flat panel. Would like something 42"-50" for less than a grand. I seem to like the pictures better on the plasmas in the stores. Suggestions? Just a casual watcher, the blur on some of the lcd's bugs me for some sports i've seen on friends tv's. Could be the broadcast, I guess.

I have a 60 inch LCD and a 50 inch plasma. Personally I like the plasma better but that's my opinion. I have heard the plasma has a shorter life span. LED seems to be the next big thing.

I saw 50in Panasonic Plasma for sale at Best Buy for 599 last weekend. $629 at Costco. I have had a 46in Panasonic for quite a few years but it won't die and I can't make the change until it does.

I got a Sony 42" Tube TV 3~4 ratio, that was the last big tube done by any company. Great picture and it was in line with the Go As Big As You Can Philosophy at the time.
Go with a flat screen as big as you (and your room) can handle. If not, you will regret it. My next one will be a 65"+ Cinema Wide. Not shure which brand. Our Sharp Aquos flat screen is very nice. Definitely not going 3D.

DO NOT buy the Best Buy "house brand" Insignia, as they are crap. Ask me how I know....

We bought a 46" Panasonic Plasma 1080I in 2009, love it. The none HD channels, however, and shows, do not show well on Plasma screens. At least this one. We bought another Panasonic a 42" 1080P, the next generation, and love that as well. Watching NFL football is a gas, big screen, incredible detail, priceless.
![]() One thing though, is that the Plasma TV's do not like direct light on them. Back lighting is ok, or no light is best. You won't see the screen detail with too much light shining on TV.

I was in the same situation last December, though I can't say the TV was actually broke. Here's what I ended up with... $619 out of box
LG 42 LCD 1080p, 120 refresh, LAN internet with youtube, netflix, etc. Just bought it in December and no complaints. Easy set up picture looks great, even old movies in B&W look incredible. I use the internet feature daily. Last night I found an hour long youtube video of TOP Gear 2010 in America and it looked pretty good. I've also ordered movies off the internet and it was absolutely flawless. If I've been absent here lately, it's because I'm watching a lot more TV.

I've been extremely happy with the Sony Bravia 52" 240Hz my family got me for Christmas two years ago.
When I went shopping for a new one for my wife to use in the family room, the salesman said the most frequent thing shoppers do is buy one that's too small. So size it to what you think you'd like, then reconsider one size larger. You won't be disappointed 6 months later if you do. My wife didn't want bigger than a 42". I got a 46" and haven't heard any complaints so far.

I'd get the one with the best technology you can.
For me that meant 1080p and 240Hz. If I had to make a choice I'd go for a 46 with those specs over a 50 720p. I just took this picture a few minutes ago from where I type this. Can't beat it for clarity IMHO.

I have a Sony 52" Bravia with the Sony surround sound, it's simply awesome. The sound that comes out of the subwoofer and the golf ball sized speakers is amazing.

I've got mine hooked up to a system that includes my 33 year old Infinity Column II's. No sub needed with those speakers. It is amazing what sound is available in some dvd's. There are bass notes in some movies that are unbelievably deep, to the point of you feel them more than here them.
