OK, I jailbroke my iPhone and iPad, loaded Cydia on both and then bought and downloaded MyWi directly from their site to the iPad (I couldn't figure out how to do it from my PC desktop). Here is the question, how do I copy MyWi from my iPad to the iPhone? I tried syncing and it didn't copy it to the desktop.

That's pretty cool. I finally got an iPhone after waiting 3 long years (Verizon) and want to tether my iPad as well. Is it necessary to jailbreak both my iPhone AND my iPad to use MyWi, or just my iPhone?

What are the main Upsides to jail breaking an iPhone? What are the main Downsides? I used to have (non-jailbroken) tethering on my iPhone, but no longer - so I'm interested now . . .

I am a novice/familiar with jailbreaking as of yesterday morning, so I don't know squat. One thing Randy told me was you probably can't ever upgrade your phones software with Apple. Most of the incremental upgrades are to kill the newest jailbreak software. You MAY in the future be able to get a jailbreak software update for new iPhone OS upgrades, but obviously no guarantees. The software cost me $24.99 and lets me use my unlimited data package on my grandfathered phone. Also, when I travel some airports have free and very slow WiFi hot spots, and some charge 45-$10/hour for a hot spot. I'm now independent of that. It will also work with any WiFi enabled device like a notebook, not just an iPad, I tried it with my wife's notebook and my iPad at the same time, and it works fine. You can also encrypt the connection. I got a WiFi signal 20 feet or so from the phone, you don't want the guy next to you in the airport snarfing off your WiFi.
Randy, I do have a question. Thinking I had to, I J/B'd the iPad as well and installed MyWi on it as well. Was that a mistake? Will I get sideways with apple if I upgrade the software on the iPad next time. Or should I reset it to factory settings, which is 4.2.1?

You can leave MyWi on the pad or take it off - doesn't really matter.
Install an app from Cydia called Cydelete to remove apps in the same manner as the apple store apps. When you upgrade the iPad next time (or perform a restore - even from backup) the jailbreak and all jailbreak apps will be removed - no worries. The only downside to JB'ing is the voiding warranty aspect. One simply has to do a restore to factory settings and then the warranty is back in effect. The latest JB tools are rock solid and do not alter the basic functionality of the phone. Of course, you never know about the app you are installing as they are not put thru Apple's testing and approval process. A quick search of the JB forums will let you know what to expect prior to installation. Upsides are vast. True multi-tasking which is very nice. Access to the root file system of the phone. Ability to use the phone as a flash drive. Installation and playback of music and video without using itunes. Tethering Complete control over the look and functionality of the phone. Ability to preview emails, calendar and texts from the lockscreen without accessing the springboard. Create and reply to texts from within any app without going to the Message app. Any many more features. Plus there is the dark side which we do not speak of. It involves obtaining stuff for free.

iOS 4.3 is out. Jailbreakers, do not upgrade. I will post back when a stable JB is released.

Hey Randy, I have a colleague who has an old 4.0.3 IIRC software on his iPhone and is interested in jailbreaking and doing the tethering thing with an iPad, since there is a current upgrade to 4.3.2 on the iPhone software, do you have any thoughts on the current jailbreak software in the link that you posted?
Thanks. BTW on a recent trip the J/B and tethering worked like a charm, especially since the hotel I was at only had Wi-Fi in the lobby, but got good cell service in my room. Thanks again. I even watched a netflix streaming movie and it worked great.

Interesting, I just synced my iPad and updated the software and the My-Wi-Fi icon has disappeared. I didn't need to have it on the iPad, but it disappeared.

When you updated your iPad software you eliminated the jailbreak and all associated JB apps.
Standard stuff. Without the jailbreak, the iPad won't allow the MyWi to be installed or retained. There is a new jailbreak tool just released for 4.3.2 (Dev-Team Blog) but it is not the dumbed down version. You have to create a custom firmware and install it via itunes - it is called RedSnow. Greenpois0n is no longer usable with 4.3.X - Apple patched the exploit the the JB guys found in the code.

Ok, thanks, I'll stick with what I have with 4.2.1 and pass this info on to my colleague and let him figure it out.

Hugh,
I just swapped over to AT&T on the cellphones. AT&T/SBC has been harrassing me for years, only this time, they made it worth my while. The new plan allows me to go to Canada or Mexico and simply use my phone and only go against minutes. We can also buy a chunk of data before we go ($25) and the data is shared between all devices. You might want to look into the Viva Mexico plan and the other one for Canada, if you're going to be there a bit. They also threw in at no extra charge (well, maybe $5 after a bunch of discounting on on other stuff) a Mifi unit. It allows 2GB of data a month with overage at $10 per GB. Not bad! The unit is smaller than most of my cell phones AND when out of the country, if using the above plan, the data on the Mifi also goes against the plan. We're running this all through our business and have the business landline and DSL line with AT&T (the DSL is the backup internet connection). I don't know if you can score a deal like this, but it makes the entire tethering thing meaningless.
