Good one, enzo.

Please help a curious Californian who is ignorant to the ways of snow. (It was about 65 degrees at the beach yesterday.) In the pics of cars stranded in Chicago, almost every car has it's windshield wipers sticking up off the glass. What's up with that?

Porsche-O-Phile 02-03-2011 06:11 AM

Didn't end up being too bad here actually. Driving was a little funky for a while but the roads are clear as of this morning and the trains were more or less on time. No biggie. We didn't get the ice that some other parts of the country got (ice is BAD - breaks tree limbs, downs power lines, etc...)

It's sunny today, albeit chillier than I'd prefer.

That's so the wiper blades don't freeze to the windshield.

With respect to the cars on LSD in Chicago, they put the wipers up to indicate that the occupants had been rescued and taken away. Smart street parkers will leave them up overnight if a significant snow is expected - no sticking to WS and easier to clean the WS.

I'm just old enough to remember the 1967 blizzard. We dug a maze of tunnels in our backyard and had drifts up to the roof! Anyway, here's Lakeshore Drive 2011 and 1967.

No power outage in NE IN. Unfortunately, we got stuck with the ice mix. 6 inches and ice. I walked out on the pond and there's ice coated 1-2" powder over our good hockey ice. Damn, it will take a lot of work to get back out on the ice.

Curt;
I remember that Chicago 1967 Blizzard very well. The odd thing about that one was that it was somewhere around 60 degrees F a day or two before that one !

I still think Jan 1979 was the worst. That big storm came on top of about a foot of snow that was already on the ground as I recall. And then it went down to about 15 or 20 below zero for a couple of nights. That Winter was my last in the Chicago area...now I am in wonderful Southern California...since 1980 !

I feel like an old Coot posting about this. I guess I am !

Great LSD photos Curt! So how was it up your way? The newscasters were speculating that even though this was "only" #3 on the snowfall total, it was probably the worst storm due to the high winds (up to 70mph gusts). The '67 storm was so bad because the weather forecasters predicted only a 4" accumulation if I remember correctly.

Me too. I was just a 10-year old kid with a dream back in '67 :D All I remember is building huge tunnels and snow forts and having a days long snowball fight with the kids across the street. It took 3 days to get plowed out of that one (I'm a ways north of Detroit).

Scott, I think we got 12" or so. Not bad, but the drifts were 6 feet in some spots. I think the ice racing is over for the year - no way to plow this much snow off the lakes. :(

So .... we just got about a 5 inch snow storm this evening (on top of the foot we got tues-wed). So i decided to shovel off the deck and it turns to rain and then lightning and thunder. I'm talking big time thunder and lightning. Been trying to take a picture of it but can't time the dig. camera to capture it. I've seen it do this before (rare in the winter) but never this intense.
Now it's back to snowing again. Weird.

Same line of TS's passed through upstate NY about 3 hours ago, nasty weather.

Porsche-O-Phile 02-05-2011 07:38 PM

Yeah this is far worse than Tuesday. Everything is melting and turning to ice. Driving is getting a bit dicey here - if it drops even another degree its going to be downright treacherous. Good day to stay home tomorrow.

If it stays like it is now (34-ish) it'll be fine but if all this melt-off freezes... Yikes - body shop's dream.

wdfifteen 02-06-2011 11:15 AM

30 here and cloudy. We have a few inches of snow on top of ice on top of a few inches of snow - it's cloudy so nothing is melting or sublimating very fast. More snow tomorrow, then temps in the single digits for a few days. I'm going to Rome for the last half of March. Wish it was the last half of Feb. I'm about ready to head south - anywhere south, if only for a few days. Really tired of this.

azasadny 02-06-2011 11:37 AM

It snowed pretty good here yesterday and the Blizzak Revo winter tires really helped!!

pete3799 02-06-2011 12:18 PM

Starting to pile up a little here
