Yasi
Any Pelicans down under being affected by this? Looks like a real monster...
Thoughts and prayers for those who are in the path. |
Not me personally but living in a cyclone prone area this thing horrifies me. It is HUGE - according to the news just on here winds gusts expected well over 300km/h.......
Good luck to those in North Queensland Tracking map and info here...... http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ65002.shtml |
My friend Mark lives in Townsville with his wife and two boys.
He just sent me this txt message: "it's getting bad" Yasi is about 2 hours from the coast... It's a Monster. :( |
Another good live link.
MTSAT Infrared Colorized Image Loop - Satellite Services Division - Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution Full on category five - they don't have a higher rating. Close to Katrina in size. Someone in Queensland must have broken a very big mirror - first the floods now this. |
Here is an image from that site overlaid on the USA to the same scale. BIG mf.

2 factors - size & intensity; current CATx doesn't fully account for the storm's damage potential
|
We have friends in Port Douglas - hoping for the best...
|
overall size is less important then distance to the eyewall
how big around and thick the eye wall is most of these storms is just wind and rain out side the eyewall eye wall plus the tornadoes in and near the eyewall do the real damage we had two boats near [ 30 miles ] ANDREW's eye in 1992 that stayed in place and afloat in open water at anchor |
Well..... that was a fun night!
We were expecting major wind damage & floods, but it wasn't too bad for us. We are on the outskirts of the windy bit. Winds reached 100ks [60mph] with accompanying rain. Some houses have roofing damage, trees fallen, power was out for most of last night. Usual stuff we wear when a cyclone is about. This is the 2nd in 2 weeks. Storm surges were going to be an issue, because, like all good cyclones, they arrive on a king tide. To date it hasn't been an issue. There are reports from Mission Beach [where it crossed the coast] & Innisfail of total detruction. The world eagerly awaits the media pictures. Fortunately there are no reported deaths atm. That in itself is a HUGE plus. The powers that be have been extremely vigilant with this storm. I applaud them for their efforts. The Govt has really picked up the ball. |
Thank goodness you guys are OK...
First aerial shots coming through of some of the areas worst hit on channel 9. Tully (sp?) looks so, so bad :(. |
I borrowed this from fb.
I hate boats, so i find it amusing. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m...marinaYasi.jpg |
