Sorry, but that is total BS. If the dog is properly crate trained it will feel very comfortable being it its spot in the crate. It also is the safest place for the dog (see "my dog ate the gardening glove" thread) while it is being unattended.

My opinion is crap? To each their own I guess. You crate your dog when you are not home (~9 hours?) and crate the dog when you are in bed (~8 hours)? So the dog gets about 7 hours a day to stretch its legs? Wow. My dog is part of the family. Doesnt chew anything and doesnt mess in the house. Good dog? Yup. Good owner too.

I wouldn't say your opinion is crap, BK, but being crated at night might not be as cruel as you think. Ideally the dog becomes quite attached and comfortable in the crate, so it's not viewed as a penalty box, but rather as the place to spend the night. It affords the dog safety and security. At least that's the way it's been explained to me. You'd have to ask my dog what she thinks. Full disclosure: my dog sleeps on a doggie bed on the ground next to our bed. Looks a bit like Rika's dog above, but curled up into a little ball. She stays there all night without any fuss. Perhaps crate-trained dogs view their crates as my dog views her pillow.

he views it as a cell..not his want to be place IMO..

I am saying this is an uninformed opinion about crate training. Sorry for using the "BS". Crate training and using a crate is a life long plan, not just for potty training. Please read online about crate training and the philosophy behind it. When applied properly it is not cruel.

My dog is in a kennel or a crate when not directly supervised. This crate is in high traffic areas of the house / porch and someone is home most the time. This is because it still is young, extremely high strung and will ingest and destroy items around the house and yard. It gets a minimum of 2 hours of exercise every day of which 30 minutes are training. It runs about 20-30 miles a week during hunting season. And it never barks inside of the kennel or crate.

My dog likes going in his crate sometimes. They say it's because of the territorial nature of the dog.

If you put them in their crate and they know that's a boundary they relax because they don't have to stress guarding the entire house if they are out. In the crate they feel in control of their environment.

with that said, I let my monster sleep next to me on the bed even tho he snores and farts occasionally.
