You're paying to have a bomb-proof vehicle that will run forever and take you to hell and back. I can't imagine a better vehicle for a turbodiesel than a FJ60 or FJ80. Even if you invest $20k, what else could you buy with the same capability? Maybe a used G-wagen if you find a good deal. An FJ80 with lockers and a turbodiesel would be a pretty impressive machine, too bad we have to build our own.

Or you can build up an old FJ45 starting at "only" $85K:eek:

Only cool if it doesn't break down. I'd dread getting spare parts in the boonies for it. A US model gas engine will be a lot easier to bring to a remote garage and have them fix it within a couple of days.

I love these trucks...had three of them, 72 FJ55 which was my absolute favorite, FJ60 & FJ80. The 72 was pre-smog three speed with Fairey Overdrive.

I had a '71 FJ40 for just over 25 years and sold it about three years ago. I bought it with about 50,000 miles on it, and sold it with just under 600,000 miles on the clock. I spent a lot of time in that thing... I put a rebuilt motor in it at about 350,000 miles, and beyond that, just routine maintenence. Rust finally got the better of it, up here in our constantly damp climate.

I absolutely loved that thing, but having been without it for a couple of years now, I'm not sure I could go back. Especially for what folks are currently asking for them. They are good, but not that good. Time has passed them by. Yes, they are as tough as they come, but you kind of have to be as well to drive one much. I think they might have as much as 2" of suspension travel, if you count sidewall flex. They are very, very stiffly sprung, and ride like an old hay wagon rolling over cobblestones.

A fellow Pelican will be selling his solid FJ60 sometime soon. Perhaps he will post here.

Thats easy. Having had both a Jeep wrangler and A 68 FJ40 The FJ is far better off road, holds more value and every A-Hole on the road does not have one.....like the Jeep. The 40 will go places that alot of off road trucks wont go. I had mine in the middle of a pond one night with water and mud over the seats inside and it just kept going!

I know nothing about Jeeps other then I had a Wranger once. It was a piece garbage. Jeeps of the old shuold be just as good as the FJ 40 off road?
