As long as we are asking about LE, what about in a parking lot?

Was driving in a parking lot recently and went against the arrows in an area well away from any city streets. These arrows "suggest" that you should go one direction and I did not.

What is the group's feeling about things like this or even a stop sign or marking in a private parking lot? I have always been told that they are advisory at best and that you do not have to obey them unless they lead onto a city street.

To make things worse in the above scenerio I made a turn into a lane where no one was coming for 100 feet, clear as can be. A pickup coming my direction drove right at me flashing his lights and honking his horn. I stopped, got out and asked him what the problem was. He started jabbering and pointing at the arrows on the ground and just acting like a dick. Things went further downhill and I asked if he was the "parking lot cop" and he just stared at me, so I got back in my truck and drove off.

Funny thing was that he passed me later on and I then saw that he was a real cop, having a FOP license plate on his vehicle. My gut feeling is that he was just being a dick and had he been able to do anything that he would have done so.

I always believed that parking lots were private property, making those signs not enforceable. At least that is what I was told years ago when my car got sideswiped in a grocery store parking lot.

I usually try to follow them or at least do a Philly roll at the stop signs, just to avoid the other guy not heeding the signs...

I agree that they are advisory. An attempt to avoid chaos.

Agreed. Years ago I too had a parking lot hit - from a woman. The cop said to take it up with your insurance.

Private property here. LEO has no jurisdiction to enforce anything unless the owner of the property wants you thrown out for doing donuts or something else they dont like.

Mostly private property....if you get a ticket, check the ownership, fight the ticket....it's only yer time. The fun part is getting the asshat written up for not knowing the difference.

PRICELESS

My wife has a picture of a lot in Portland where all the arrows point either "in" or "out." We always got a laugh off that.

Whatever you do, Joe, don't do it while working:

While taxiing at Gatwick Airport, the crew of US Air 2771 made a wrong turn and came nose to nose with a United 727. A female ground controller lashed out at the US Air crew, screaming: "US Air 2771, where do you think you’re going? I told you to turn right onto Charlie taxiway, but you turned right on Delta! I know it's difficult for you to tell the difference between C and D, but god! Now you've screwed everything up. It'll take forever to sort this out. You stay right there and don't move till I tell you to. You can expect progressive taxi instructions in about half an hour, and I want you to go exactly where I tell you, when I tell you, and how I tell you. You got that, US Air 2771?”

"Yes, ma'am," the humbled crew responded.

The radio frequency fell silent after the verbal bashing of the US Air crew. Nobody wanted to be the first to break the silence. Then an unknown pilot broke the silence and keyed his microphone, asking: "Wasn't I married to you once?"

in a few states it classified that if there is more than one entrance/exit then it is deemed to have traffic flow and can be patrolled by cops.....found this out doing a burnout once LOL

Not true. Even if the owner/tenant makes no complaint, LEO/meter maids can write you up for parking in a handicap spot.

Weekend morning. No one in the lot. One of the docs working at a private clinic got a ticket for parking in a handicap spot. No other cars in the lot and the clinic was not open, so there wasn't anyone else to complain. Still got the ticket.

Perhaps it does vary by state, then.

I had a police officer friend in MA explain to me once that he's allowed to ticket for offenses in parking lots. Something about public access allows them to have jurisdiction, even though it might technically be private property.

Or perhaps enforcement/interpretation is up to the whim of the LEO.

Diff category...ones a mover one isn't. Movers need a witness and a complainant. The vehicle code usually mandates a "public road".....

Static violations can be done with a previous letter of authorization and more better....a posted sign. Freaking Doctors in a handicapped zone in an empty lot?

HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH HAHAHAHA!

Ahem, I have a little sympathy.....\\Now an LEO can write a ticket for anything....legal or not. It's up to you as a citizen to defend yourself....remember you're guilty until you prove you're not.....it's in the Constitution.

I must be missing something. It makes sense to me. You got entrances, and you got exits. In or out.

No, you misunderstand. ALL the arrows are of the "In" variety, or ALL the arrows are of the "Out" variety. No mix and match.

Next question. How about the same scenario but in a local, state or fed parking lot?

How about a post office parking lot? State or fed building parking lot?

Any difference? Its still a parking lot and not a legal city street...

Good question....I would think it depends o how title is held. A lot of gubmint buildings lease or rent unless they are on a campus.
