Cat question.

Why do cats eat fish? That makes no sense to me.

Another question... Would you feed a dog fish?

Rick V 02-10-2011 01:37 AM

What about catfish?

slodave 02-10-2011 01:45 AM

Or dogfish?

WolfeMacleod 02-10-2011 01:46 AM

Why is there no Mousefish?

slodave 02-10-2011 01:49 AM

There is.

Mickey Mouse Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus)

Because they don't need a fishing licence

Actually, I don't feed fish to cats, but my dogs LOVE fish. I read somewhere, or was told by a vet, that in the wild, cats don't "fish", but dogs will eat fish (not sure if they catch them or eat dead ones that have washed up).

Like I said, my dogs love anything that smells fishy. Most of the food that we feed them is uses fish and they get treats that are made of salmon.

Porsche-O-Phile 02-10-2011 04:05 AM

Something fishy in this thread...

It's gone to the dogs too.

jhynesrockmtn 02-10-2011 06:39 AM

Make sure the dogs don't get raw fish. Killed my sisters dog several years ago. I'm just trying to find a food that doesn't make my kitten fart. She's a lap cat too :-(

UconnTim97 02-10-2011 06:49 AM

Kitten farts are the worst. Our cat did that, she finally out grew it when she was about 1 year old.

Our cat eats all kinds of meat, poultry, and fish. She a carnivore, a very finicky carnivore at that. She will only eat unseasoned meat, etc. I think steamed shrimp is her favorite. We only give her small pieces occasionally as a treat, it is not the mainstay of her diet.

FPB111 02-10-2011 07:13 AM

My grandfather had two big white male (not deaf) barn cats that would go to the stream and fish when they wanted a snack. He said they started when they were around 1 year old. The stream was about 1 foot deep in the center.

Kittens do that.

Feed dry and limit the wet.

Wet cat food makes for stinky poop and a strict diet of it can lead to tartar buildup/tooth decay.

They need the dry to help clean their teeth.

Have 4 cats and only one is a true carnivore. You can't feed her by hand or you'll lose a digit. My wife and I joke that if we were alone and became incapacitated for any longer than a day there is no doubt she'd start chowing down on us.

juanbenae 02-10-2011 12:17 PM

canned cat food that is fish based is bad for cat's urinary tracks. nearly lost my cat because of that.

Fish too.. No pics, i just know there were fish in the fishpond when i bought my house and now there ain't.

Btw, in case you hadn't noticed, Boris is mental.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1297370355.jpg

He was found starved as a kitten, and the hunger never left him.

dhoward 02-10-2011 12:51 PM

Our cats both drink out of a fishbowl we have that has had a beta in it for two years. There are plenty of water sources in our house for pets, but they prefer the fishbowl.

Meow Mix, baby!

Seriously, Purina know how to make animal feed. All I've ever fed my cat is Meow Mix. Super healthy at 12 years old. Make sure they have access to lots of water if they only eat dry. And the stinky poop is the reason I started my cats this way.

And it's cheaper.

That picture is great! We had a thanksgiving where the cats stole the carcass off the counter, then dragged it to their regular feeding area.

Brando 02-10-2011 01:06 PM

Got 2 lethargic kitties at home... One is a vicious hunter... Funniest part, he's the biggest (21lbs) and has the tiniest meow.

svandamme 02-10-2011 01:24 PM

Boris makes sounds so high pitched I sometimes think that's how he catches mice...
He's got no bass in him, at all...he can hardly produce audible purring...

teenerted1 02-10-2011 02:31 PM

cant answer for cats but my dog has wheat/grain allergies. his skin gets dried out and other fun reactions.
the dry food the vet had started him on has fish and potato as the first two ingredients
fish for the protein, potato for the starch. luckily there are more brands in the stores now that have these two so i dont have to pay vet food prices. i tried to be cheap for a few weeks and only give him canned tuna at night...bad idea, yard was a mess.

of course the dog cant go fishing with us at the river anymore. have you ever tried to get the smell of a dead salmon carcass out of your car?

She's the zombie cat. Won't die.

Mastectomy, deaf, nearly blind, barely has a sense of smell, diabetic, possibly arthritic and Vet suspects she has Alzheimer's or some form of dementia.

But when it comes to food she's possessed. Getting in her way is suicidal and the other 3 are well aware of it.

I would say that Seal farts are the worst - consider the diet...

There may be some other mammal that is worse but science has not yet found it...

Ever dated a vegan who likes spicy beans?

Nothing worse than "giving the cat a bath" and getting honked on....

UconnTim97 02-10-2011 07:17 PM

I used to sit next to a vegan girl at work, I swear to all things big and small, it smelled like a fresh steaming cow patty everytime she let one go.

Porsche-O-Phile 02-10-2011 10:21 PM

Do this: get a couple of boxes of Atkins bars - whatever kind/flavor you like and eat nothing but those for a day or two. Holy Moses, you won't believe the methane discharge that'll come a-shootin outta yer arse... The sugar alcohols build up a massive amount of gas production and it STINKS! A friend of mine did this to get even with a coworker who sat next to him... I guess this girl was so miserable after two days of sitting in his stink-cloud she used two personal days and then begged the boss for a different desk! LOL!

HHI944 02-10-2011 10:30 PM

Fish is the first ingredient in the food I feed my dog. He gets the Blue Buffalo Mature formula and can still drag me on runs up to about the 4.5-5 mile mark at 13yrs. He had really bad skin allergies before switching to this food as well.

you seem to have accumulated some interesting experiences that are often relatively uncommon in Houston...

red-beard 02-11-2011 12:40 PM

I wasn't always from Texas...but I got back here as soon as I could...

It might have had something to do with the Vegan...
