Survey for employees who have been promoted within the past 5 years:
1. Company name (optional): Rutgers 2. Size of company (Small, medium, large): medium 3. Scope of company (local, regional, national, global): State University 4. What type of position were you promoted from? Assistant research professor 5. What type of position were you promoted to? Associate research professor 6. Who initiated the promotion? Myself 7. Was the promotion an 'in-line' promotion, or to a position within a different group or organization? in line 8. What part of the promotion process were you responsible for? (Ex: creating a new job description & position, verifying the job specifics, clarifying questions, creating the pay scale...etc) Gathering 10 external letters of reference, putting together the package, and coming up with the extra salary. 9. How long did the promotion process itself take? (Consider the starting point to be when you were either told about the planned promotion, or when you started the promotion process) It takes over a year. I am half way through it. 10. What were some positive aspects you experienced during the promotion process? (Note: please focus on the process, not the new position) Contacting people who have good things to say about you. 11. What were some drawbacks you experienced during the promotion process? (Note: please focus on the promotion process, not the new position) Being promoted but having to come up with the money takes all the fun out of it! 12. How could the promotion process be improved? In the specific case of my University, they apply a rigorous process for tenuring professors to those like me who are not on tenure track. That is highly unfair, since I go the same process of someone who will get a job for life paid by the State, for 6 months appointments paid by myself. There should be two processes. 13. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the job promotion process at your company? 2. It is idiotic bureaucracy at its best.
