I've never used Gen 1 night vision... When i first joined the military we had Gen 2's, the picture was alright but was a bit grainy. Depending on ambient lighting was how bad the graininess was... the less light the more grainy. Depth perception was crappy. you could either have close or far. Just had to twist the lens at the end to change the perception. I expect the Gen 1's to be a fair bit worse than the Gen 2's. But for 270-300. I'd probably jump on it..

When I left the Service we were using Gen III and that was 15 years ago.
