question for IT guys.
Anyone who are an expert in supporting PC can give me an opinion?
All in a sudden, it takes a long time for the mouse to activate after a reboot. Then after using the computer for several mins, mouse and keyboard freezed. Cold turned off the computer and turn it back on, it gave a long beep right after pressing the button, and shut down, then automatically turn back up again. Then it gave a long beep and shut down again. So it keep doing it forever until you shut down the power. After repeating it hundred times, not it's back on, but still took longer for the mouse to activate. I suspect the mother board. Anyone know what wrong? |
Could be a failing power supply... How old is the PC?
|
Or a bad USB/PS2 port on the mobo that the keyboard and mouse is plugged into...
Try booting with an Ubuntu live cd and see if all the hardware works... |
Sounds like a drive going bad to me but hardware issues are difficult to determine as they can have similar symptoms.
The beeps. They generally mean you have a boot or post error. If you can determine which motherboard you have, you should be able to diagnose the beeps. They are a code - usually. Slow, inconsistent and difficult boots are signs of bad drive, bad ram or another problem on the board. Locking up of the input controls during posting is also a sign of bad drive, ram or board. I would try a different drive first since they fail most often. Ram has been known to go bad but not as frequently as some people think. Bad boards are somewhat rare in my world. Of course a bad power supply can be an issue as well. |
As above hardware. Use process of elimination:
1. boot without mouse 2. boot without keyboard 3. boot with half the memory removed 4. boot with the other half of the memory 5. Remove all other USB devices 6. Disconnect the HDD and boot with a live cd, everything functioning? |
booted with USB mouse/keyboard, problem were there
booted with PS2 mouse/keyboard, problem still there booted without any mouse/keyboard, problem still there. booted without any UBS devices, include printer and such, problem still there. booted after banging on the computer, problem still there. booted with everything back on, before go to bed, problem gone.  |
Back up your data - right now. If its a bad drive you are on borrowed time.
