Hair cuts/styles. How often if ever do you change?

My latest random curiosity. I'm wondering how many of you have significantly changed your hair cut/style and/or color over the years, and if so, what was the impetus behind it and were you happy with the outcome?

I've been contemplating some sort of change - much shorter, specifically - for quite some time but have not pulled the trigger. It's been cut more or less the same way since the mid-80's, except for a relatively brief pony-tail period that lasted a few years.

So what's the trend in the PPOT crowd - have you kept it the same since your mama still dressed you, or do you change every few years (or even more often?)

Tobra 02-16-2011 09:34 PM

rarely, I grew it out for that locks of love thing, but prefer short

Neel 02-16-2011 10:00 PM

Very short in the late '60s, Uncle Sam's idea.. Long in the late '70s.. 'Profressional' when I was teaching.. I'm retired now.. I only get a hair cut when I want to, or my when my new wife tells me to..

crustychief 02-16-2011 10:09 PM

Short since high school, shorter in the military, still short but grayer now.

Embraer 02-16-2011 10:12 PM

buzzed for 5 years. i came to terms with thinning hair right after i graduated college.

Evans, Marv 02-16-2011 10:28 PM

Mostly the same since I was in elementary school. I'd get a flat top during the summers but go back to the same after that. Grew it down to my shoulders in the late '60s into the '70s but went back to the same after that. Been the same old, same old for the last 45+ years now, just gray. My wife likes it. I'm happy to have hair since all the males I'm related to are bald.

I use the Flowbee...

Just cut my own hair this week.
Have been for 20 years.

Once since September of 1986. It lasted about 2 months before I changed it back.

slodave 02-16-2011 11:39 PM

Mine's past my waist. No plans to change anytime soon.

Geronimo '74 02-16-2011 11:47 PM

Had it longer in my teens, came to my senses and cut it off.
Now it's short, switching between just short and a buzzcut.
I look better with short hair, ladies seem to think so too.
And short hair is really practical, IMO.

Never experimented with color.

Got a "punk" cut in 8th grade(1980), grew it long for the rock band days, got it cut again for a real job and kept it short until I got laid off. I had planned to grow it long again because I was "free". (I forgot that my wife hadn't yet given her thoughts on that idea.) So, it's been back to respectable for the past couple of years.

jyl 02-17-2011 03:05 AM

Sort of a 'fro in college. Shorter in law school. Shorter when I started working. Experimented with color once, my am I brave.
That's about it.

Porsche-O-Phile 02-17-2011 03:43 AM

Spent $75 on a trimmer/buzzer a couple of years ago - I like it that way... Simple, easy, clean, conservative look and I don't have to pay anyone to do it. About 20 minutes of my time every month or two. I don't want to have to think about it beyond that.

on2wheels52 02-17-2011 04:40 AM

My wife has been cutting it the last 25 years (she was a beautician for a couple of years before we met), she cuts it a bit shorter in the summer, longer the rest of the year.
re color change, I've been adding some gray to it for some time. I'd just as soon go back to the original color but am not sure how to go about it. Just happy to have a pretty full head at near 60.

depends on if i have to be in court or not

otherwise it's a waste of time going to a barber

GH85Carrera 02-17-2011 05:39 AM

As a child of an Air Force officer I had very very short hair until I was old enough to pay for my own haircuts. My hair has never been very long. It is short enough that I never use a hair dryer. A small amount of shampoo, rinse and towel dry. I am done.

I have never understood long hair on a man. But there are lots of things I don't understand.

you're from Malibu area

go hit Main St in Santa Monica for the hair shop next to the town tower or whatever the old building is on the opposite side of the "beach side" of the street. Tell the male owner you want to be in style for the hot babes hanging out this summer. Also ask him if a little tinting will knock 10 years off your first impression. Sometimes the shop also pumps sidewalk traffic with good deals like $25 or $50 off. Most area shops just rent out their chairs to flakes. This shop is the real deal run and worked by the owner for the last 20 years. His daily wheels is a 911

God the ultimate jokester picked my haircut a long time ago. hardeeharharhar, funny man in white flowing robes, and strange glow. all the pictures i see of him he is sporting a healthy white mane of hair.

not me. i recently changed hairstyles when i took the #1 steel blade off my Oster classic and switched to a #00. i take it all down now. sour grapes..i didnt want that stupid hair anyways.

red-beard 02-17-2011 07:17 AM

Your brother?

My hair has been the same since middle school when I ditched the part. a little longer in the 70's and 80's. What goes up and down is sideburns. I have about level with my ear lobes and have for 10 years. I was ahead of the F1 drivers on that.

I never cut the SB's level with the top of the ear like the NASCAR boys did. Talk about some stupid haircuts.

bivenator 02-17-2011 08:25 AM

Brushed it back (think tv preacher) till about 7 yrs ago when I began to brush it forward. Always short, even back in 80's high school daze. (punk)

Brando 02-17-2011 08:50 AM

Less than an inch on top, about half an inch on the sides. Long enough to spike it, short enough to make wearing a helmet comfortable.

wdfifteen 02-17-2011 10:38 AM

Medium for many years. But I've never in my life shaved by moustache or my chin. Changed from Goatee to a full beard about 2 years ago.

Tim Hancock 02-17-2011 11:11 AM

Kind of shaggy as a kid in the 70's..... Got shaved in basic in the mid 80's then kept it fairly short ever since.

Have never had a desire to have girl length long hair and never will.

- #3 or #4 with clipper on the sides/back
- about barber finger thickness on top
- about 1/2" side burns

Rikao4 02-17-2011 11:32 AM

sammyg2 02-17-2011 11:47 AM

Lessee, I went from a forehead to a five-head, does that count?

I never cared if it turned grey, i just don't want it to turn loose!

A930Rocket 02-17-2011 12:21 PM

It''s been short as a young kid, medium as an early teen, shoulder length in high school (sr year), back to over the collar and ears with short side burns, permed to make some waves in my early 20's (it was straight as an arrow). Went from white blonde to yellow blond to brown
( late 20's) to gray (late 30's). Dyed it once about 6 months ago on my wife's advice.

It's been above the ears and collar short since late 20's.

What I'd like to do is learn to cut my hair vs paying $15-18. Any ideas?

That's me, except I keep the burns about half way down the ear, and my basic training was private school.

And like others, I've been adding a bit of gray lately.

Edit: And a $10 cut from the "barber shop"

fastfredracing 02-17-2011 03:18 PM

I was a long hair most of my youth well up until about 5 years ago. Now, I will let it grow long in the winter months, and get a nice respectable hair cut in the spring. I am starting to look a little bit shaggy right now. I even wash and comb it once in a while. I sort of like it long, ( my own little social protest), but every time I trim it short, people tell me I look like I am 20 years old again.
