Best video game system ???

With some of the new stuff like kinekt (or how ever it's spelled) what is the going consensus to what's the best system??? Playstation 3, XBox, Wii ??? What memory size or is it better to just buy an external USB hard drive ???

I would like to hook up a steering wheel & pedals... Gran Tourismo...

Kids LOVE to play all the Lego games...

stomachmonkey 02-17-2011 04:49 AM

For kids and family time it's the Wii.

Lego games on the Wii are good fun.

GT developer is wholly owned by Sony so you'll never see it on the Xbox.

Still, prefer Xbox hands down.

Kinect is cool, definitely an evolution. Move is a Wiimote wannabe.

The Xbox guys have been getting it right while Sony continues to shoot themselves in the foot.

The Wii uses considerably less energy, if that's a factor: XBOX 360 vs PS3 (and Wii) - Power Consumption Report - hardCOREware.net

Sony's been caught with their rootkit fiasco and whatnot, some products don't last too long, but their tv's have a good picture.

If you can get your hands on the original PS3, the thick one, not the thin, they support LINUX. Makes for a real cheap hi end LINUX PC.

DOD bought 2,200 of them and turned them into a Super Computer.

MSFT and Sony lose money on the hardware and make up the difference in software sales/royalties.

I would get a 360 elite with the biggest HD they make... And Forza 3 is a very good racing sim too. They have Porsche cars, which GT5 does not...

bivenator 02-17-2011 08:14 AM

Not trying to nitpik, but GT5 has RUF porsches. Not as much content as forza, but there is some.

porsche4life 02-17-2011 09:08 AM

I have a major problem with the GT series... More than once in Gt4 I would be racing in a tricked out RUF car that would on paper just walk out on the competition, then some damned skyline would just jump out front and leave everyone. So I got a skyline, and guess who was winning everything now? I feel like since the GT series comes straight out of Japan it is biased against the German cars. In Forza, I can hop in a GT3 cup and run with the pack everytime....

bivenator 02-17-2011 09:19 AM

That funny Sid, I was going to put a similar thought in my post about the J cars having an unfair advantage over the rest of the field but didn't have time to finish. GT5 does have a bias.

JeremyD 02-17-2011 11:11 AM

Definitely J car biased. I keep having to tell my son - well in real life that Carrera GT in the right hands would pOwN the skyrine.

xBox 360 in our house - I have all the racing games - but it's like watching porn - I'd rather be doing it.

Now xBox live - and playing against 500,000 other people on Halo Reach or Call of Duty is pretty wild.

Wii is for kids
XBOX for teens
PS3 for adults.

PS3, more reliable, better technology, no monthly fees, great games, Blu-Ray and 3D support.

...oh, and a LOT less game-hacking on the PS3.

"Wii is for kids"

And old people.

Does the GT series now have a "rewind" button for when you bugger up? I really like that feature on Forza... keeps my blood pressure down. ;)

We have a "base model" Xbox 360....i.e. no hard drive. My son wants to play online, which I think requires a hard drive and Xbox Live subscription. I want a blu-ray player, and I want to be able to stream Netflix from the Internet and also want to stream i-Tunes from my laptop to my A/V receiver.

Is it worth/capable/cost-effective to try to make our base model Xbox 360 do all of these things? Or do I need "other" equipment?

Thanks...and sorry if this is a hijack.

Thanks for all the inputs...

I like the simple "kids, teens, adults" break down...

I was leaning toward the PS3 because of the blu-ray capability to boot, but XBox wasn't far off and is now tied in my mind... It sort of bugs me to hear of the rice-burner bias... I guess I have my own bias toward p-cars, but I'd rather a high dollar game like these just try to be realistic as possible. Plus, as for a driving game, I was hoping to get a game that had the Nurburgring in it. I thought GT had this (not sure if it still does), and I've never see Forza...

please keep trying to convince me...

(JA: don't worry, no hjack, it was a good valid question...)

just found out my son is going to have to have his tonsils/adenoids (spelling??) out and is going to be out of commission for a week or so.... Thought I'd try a bid for coolest parent of the year (in his eyes) by picking up a game system....

Is there a down side to getting system with a smaller hard drive size and buying a 1 or 2 TB USB drive that you can also use on your computer ???

slakjaw 02-17-2011 08:37 PM

I refuse to give Sony Ericsson my money so its xbox for me :)

onewhippedpuppy 02-18-2011 03:53 AM

How old is your son? My 6 year old struggles with the Xbox controller, it's too big for his hands. One of the reasons we bought a PS3. GT5 is an awesome game, the depth of content is staggering. They do have multiple versions of the Nurburgring, as well as the Top Gear track and nearly every other famous track on Earth. A comparison I read between it and Forza rated Forza as a bit more fun with slightly better graphics, but GT5 higher in realism and content. My son and I LOVE it.

rexav8r 02-18-2011 04:31 PM

My son is 8 and already plays Total Immersion Racing and Colin McRae Rally (difficult) on the iMac. (W/ steering wheel and pedals). Need for Speed Carbon sucks. We've got it, but I don't really get it...

PS3 does all of that. Probably for less than upgrading your Xbox.

stomachmonkey 02-18-2011 04:45 PM

360 is the better system.

Last time we had this discussion I polled my office, we are a video game publisher if it means anything and the unanimous reponse from people that earn their living making products for every platform us

360
Wii
PS3

In that order.

It's not just about the tech specs.

rexav8r 02-18-2011 04:45 PM

Chris, what's game hacking ???
