I always shift when it sounds like it is time to shift.

One of the joys of the Porsche flat 6 is the torque in the mid to higher RPMs. When driving air-cooled Porsches I generally cruise at 3-4k and shift from 3k up to red.

My DD is a turboed Subaru flat four and I generally follow the same technique, though I have no problem cruising on the freeway at 2.5k with that car.

My car is limited at 7000 with the MSD rev limiter.

I'll free it up to 7300-7400 later this year.

Your dad is a good guy. He let you drive the 356.
One of the things I most regret in life is telling my stepson he couldn't drive my Speedster to his prom when he asked. The lights weren't working and it wasn't starting reliably and I was too lazy to fix it. As I look back - seeing he and Andrea drive off in that car would be one of my fondest memories and proudest moments. I've been kicking myself for 25 years over that.

Between 5000 and 7300 RPM.

I learned to drive in it but wasn't allowed to drive it myself on the streets... so if it makes you feel any better I couldn't take it to my prom either, and it is "just" a C coupe... but had has been dead for almost 15 years now, and I still have the car.

Same here. I keep reading all about focus on certain rev numbers. I believe load is more relevant than exact revolutions.

Milt Mitner who raced for Ford in Mustangs in the Trans Am Series in 1967 .The Alfa Romeo Club of Southern California had him out as a guest instructor.

He buckled into the drivers seat of my '67 fastback mustang. He asked me that question.

"Peak Hp is at 6,400 rpm so I shift around there" He grumbled "seems about right." "Did I ever tell you how much I HATED driving these heavy pigs" he exclaimed.

Leaving pit row on a cold engine on the warm up lap he hit 7,100 rpm for his shift into 2nd.

I could go about the three laps of terror, but I will say that his lap times helped me to drop my lap times down to his. Thank You Milt!

I don't really know for sure but somewhere over 3,000... I shift when it feels/sounds right.

My old car loves revs... She just goes and goes.

On one of my first drives I existing the car with the engine running to check the oil level. As I got out of the seat my left foot flattened the throttle. (RHD)
It took me a few moments to realize what was happening and as I took my foot of the pedal I saw well over 7,500 on the RPM gauge.

That scared the hell out of me... I was expecting the thing to blow on the way home. That was over 11 years ago. :D

Shift a few hundred rpms above peak horsepower, depending on how heavy the flywheel is

A930Rocket 02-20-2011 08:43 AM

On the track, I had a shift light that came on at 6000 RPM, then the MSD kicked in at 6400 RPM. Conservative? Maybe, but it helps the engine to live longer IMHO.
