I'm in NJ -- but can you be more specific? NJ is, after all 8,721 sq. miles. (70 miles wide, 150 miles long). There's a lot of real estate between High Point and Cape May...

Ok here is the deal. A good friend of mine, the guy that bought my S Targa, lives in CZ. He has bought many other Porsches since he bought mine. He has TT a guy 15 minutes outside Newark that has a 993 for sale and he wants to buy it. However, the guy wants ALL the money up front and is unwilling to take a 50% deposit to hold the car until he comes in for the Hershey swap meet next month. I understand the mutual suspicion, but my guy is on the level. He is even flying in from CZ to Newark the week of Hershey. he wants to wire the money to me, then go to NJ from PA to look at the car, buy it, and bring it back to PA until he comes here after Hershey. He then drives the car back to NJ, ships it to CZ, and he flies back to CZ. This seems like a huge waste of time to me, although I DO get to drive a 993 for a while. Do ya'll think this seller is being unreasonable? I offered to call him and vouch for my guy, but I'm wondering if it could be a scam myself.

Are you just wanting someone to go look over the car, make sure its real, or do you want a shop to do PPI? I am very close to Newark (10miles) and could go have a look this weekend if the seller is agreeable.

I`d be wary of a 993 near Newark, simply because Newark is one of the worst towns in NJ for crime. The only worse place that I could think of would be Camden, which has the highest crime rate in the US .

So I have heard, that is what makes me suspicious. I would need somebody to just go take a look see to make sure this is all on the level. I have pics of the car, and it looks good enough. We are just a little apprehensive about sending a lot of money to a guy we know nothing about and is pretty firm on getting all the cash at once.

Likely the seller is thinking possible scam as the buyer is foreign.

Yes Newark is bad, but he said 15min from Newark. Within 15min of Newark you also have some of the most wealthy communities in NJ.

Very true. Bad idea from the seller to use Newark as his reference point, unless that is where he lives...

I could get the VIN..why?

Yes I understand the fear of a foreign buyer. I had my doubts too when I sold him mine, but it went smooth as glass.

Hmmn...I could see the seller referencing proximity to Newark when dealing with a foreign buyer since it is both the seaport and the site of the area's international airport.

It sounds like the seller wants to sell the car now, not later. Not an unreasonable position. The Hershey swap meet is two months away. A 50% deposit indicates that the buyer is not fully comitted to buy the car at this point in time. A non-refundable deposit, backed up with a legal contract, is another matter but the seller is still out the use of half of his money, for two months.

My advice to the buyer would be to arrange for a mechanical PPI and a separate body inspection by a restoration or body shop familiar with these cars. If all goes well, I'd suggest that he then hire an attorney to provide an escrow service to complete the transaction. All that would be left is insuring it for the two month's storage time and finding a safe place to keep it.

15 minutes away can put you in Short Hills, NJ-home to at least four or five billionaires. Palumbo's in Millburn races cars in PCA Club Racing, they can do a PPI.
