Is it O.K. to call a black guy "brother"?
Well, I did it anyhow, in casual conversation with the neighbor at one of the rental houses. He came out to thank me for cleaning up around the front of his house. We chatted real quick, and cordial , he thanked me again, and I said " no problem brother" Nothing was meant by it, but it sort of did not feel right as the words slid off my lips.
My lady says that is a no no. He did not seem bothered by it. Just wondering What says you?

I don't see any problem. Doesn't seem that you did it in a condescending manner.

I suspect it has a lot to do with your attitude/how you come off and his attitude.
I'd think that with most adults in a casual environment, it should be fine. If you were to come off as condescending or racist, well, that would probably be bad. Also, if the guy has a chip on his shoulder or is sensitive, it may not matter what the circumstances are. Normal adults probably realize that some folks use "bro" or "brother" like some people use "dude", "man", "guy", etc.... Now, if you'd said "boy", well, that would probably be really bad. If you feel really weird about it, or you are worried about it. You could always mention it the next time you see them.

Non issue unless you are dealing with the insecure.

It's fine.
Do you call your other friends "brother?"

I have at least twenty guys calling me brother (or bro). None of them (or me) are black. I make bets with one of my buddys who hangs out there how many times Mr. X will call me 'brother' during the 5 minutes he is at the shop.

I don't know what to tell you. When I fly with a black guy, I just call him by his name.

don't see any problems, I only have one "sister" and no real brother(s). The guys in my running club all call each other brother & my business partner is like a brother to me so, I see no problem, I think it's a good thing, not bad or out of taste.

Aren't we all brothers in the grand scheme of things.

Now in 993 land ...

It would be "No problem my brother". I would not call a black guy that unless a) we are friends and b) he calls me that first.

Cracka' ! , sometimes white cracker, is a pejorative term for poor white people. It is especially used for the white inhabitants of the U.S. states of Georgia ...

Coming from a Black Man (Me)...I also ride a Harley and my wife and I are very active in our HOG chapter. That being said, I have no problems being called Bro, Brother, etc. It's how we all identify each other when out on rides all the time. I am also a retired service member (who happens to be deployed to Iraq as I type this) who is still called "Bro" daily by the young and old soldiers, sailors, and airmen no matter what their color. It's "how we roll". When I am called brother or bro by someone other than a fellow African American it reaffirms the fact that we have com ALONG way from the way things used to be. It actually brings a smile to my face. So to answer your question, Bro, "not a problem, you're good".
