This one sort of hit close to home. My wife emailed me a link to this story on Friday and said Sheriff Joe's deputies were at her office with a search warrant. She works at PF Chang's corp. HQ. I've been telling her forever she needs to carry at least a photocopy of her passport and green card in her purse. Well, Friday I jumped in the car and rushed over to her office to hand them off to her before the deputies got to her desk. I was sure she was getting cuffed and would be in the tank before I could get there, but it all worked out.

There was one entry level technical (semi-skilled) job opening around here a while back. The company put out an add the next day informing people they stopped taking applications at 200. I think the unemployment situation is grossly underreported, which may be a good thing. There's a lot of desperation out there. I hope we're not sitting on a powder keg. Alls we need is Michael Moore rousing some rabble.

Wei Pei obviously didn't get put out of business for hiring illegals, but did they at least get fined? I can't find any information about how/if they were penalized.

Did anyone see that story on national or local news outside Arizona?

My company advertised about 24 job openings paying around $25 to start.
They processed over 4000 applications.
They administered the basic reading, language comprehension tests that are supposed to be equivalent to high school grad tests.
Less than 20% passed these tests which are considered bare minimum even to be considered for employment.

Our parents told us that we need to pay attention in school and get a good education.
Our teachers told us that we need to pay attention in school and get a good education.
Everyone told us that we need to pay attention in school and get a good education.
Some of us listened. Many did not.
I made darn sure my kids understand that concept and they both get straight A's.

I'm worried for them though, they will undoubtedly end up with idiots working for them.

We make our own breaks and open our own doors through our own habits and decisions.
Yes times are really tough now and many good people are hurting through no fault of their own, but they'll get through it.
The rest will be looking for the gubmint to take care of them because of their own mistakes.

Heck of a way to teach a lesson to the next generation:
go ahead and screw up, there won't be any consequences.

I didn't see it at all in the Arizona Republic, just a few local news stations' websites. Sheriff Joe must have really done a clean sweep and nailed some guilty perps for there to not be protests and lawsuits over it.

I believe there's a backlash happening against attackers of Sheriff Joe. The straits are becoming more dire and sympathies for illegals is waning.

Michigan seems to have been hit the hardest.
Just think what it would have been like if GM, Ford, and Chrysler all went under.

Well, there is plenty of sympathy for illegal workers and lots of ire at employers, since they're seen as labor and management, respectively. (That's not how I see it, fwiw.) However, when it comes to ID theft, everyone gets pissed off. I heard this bust was a result of Sheriff Joe finding 100 locals who'd had their identities stolen and wanted to assist in the investigation. Kinda hard to turn that down. I'm sure some of those 100 folks are sympathetic to the illegals, but not enough to forgive ID theft.

BTW, I'm curious what an employer can do beyond running someone through E-Verify. Obviously, if the ID is stolen, there's a good chance of that job applicant showing up as legal, since the docs are legit, just not his. What else can you do? Tell someone they have mighty brown skin and speak bad English for having a name like Bill Smith and do some extra vetting? That begs for a lawsuit. And the feds don't want to solve the problem anyway. I started a thread last summer about DOJ's lawsuit against Maricopa Community Colleges for refusing to hire a foreigner who couldn't produce a green card. With friends like DOJ, who needs enemies?

In effect, GM and Chrysler already have. The messiah's savior of GM (the Volt) has sold under 300 units as of last Friday. Both companies are on life support but Obama has given them waivers from end of life counseling. If this economy and it's current trajectory were happening during a republican presidency there would be riots and impeachment proceedings well under way.

I agree that our government does too much to help screw-ups, though I'm probably not thinking of the same screw-ups you are.
AIG got $170 billion from taxpayers because they screwed up so badly the company was going to tank, then they gave out $165 in bonuses to the people who did the screwing up.
I wonder how many poor kids could be housed and fed for $165,000,000.

The trajectory was more sharply down during the republican's presidency than it is now. That's why republicans got pounded in the 2008 election. It didn't turn around fast enough, that's why dems got pounded in 2010. It's heading up now, but not much, so we'll have to wait to see what happens in 2012. No riots needed. This is the USA.

What an uninformed comment

Rick, WOW! why does/did your wife need to carry around a copy of her passport and or green card (for employment purposes)? Copies of such accompany an I-9 which every employer is supposed to have for each and every employee? Is PF's that F'd up to not have such? Perhaps things related to such matters are a changing in AZ?
