In addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control facility, all aircraft in the Persian Gulf AOR are required to give the Iranian Air Defense Radar (military) a ten minute 'heads up' if they will be transiting Iranian airspace. The following conversation was heard on the VHF Guard (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz. Iranian Air Defense Radar: 'Unknown aircraft, you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself.' Aircraft: 'This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace.' Air Defense Radar: 'You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!' Aircraft: 'This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 fighter. Send 'em up, I'll wait.' Air Defense Radar: (total silence) |
I had to google it...

US SHIP: Please divert your course 0.5 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
CANADIAN REPLY: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision. US SHIP: This is the Captain of the US Navy Ship. I say again, divert YOUR course. CANADIAN REPLY: No, I say again, divert YOUR course! US SHIP: THIS IS THE USS MISSOURI. WE ARE A LARGE BATTLESHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW OR WE WILL TAKE APPROPRIATE AND DRASTIC MEASURES!!!! CANADIAN REPLY: This is a lighthouse. Your call. Yes, this is an urban legend, but it's still good fun ;) |

I had so many funny communication videos that I'd show during Threat and Error Management (modern CRM) at the airline...maybe I can dig some up.

The best one is (said to be) where a transposition error was made in sending a code from a USN ship -- it had been sent to investigate something or other in the 19502, and intended to send the following message
"situation unclear" by mistake, the "U" and the "N" were switched |

F15 or 18's are in town practicing. Saw a flight of four flying in a wedge. Very cool.
