has anyone ever found a decent wine in a box?

it has to exist..i know it.

unicorn?

ledhedsymbols 02-24-2011 02:56 PM

All of them... Of course I drink Wild Irish Rose too!

James Brown 02-24-2011 03:15 PM

Black box is pretty tasty. I was at a friends house and it was in the kitchen. He said draw a glass and taste it, it was good, so was the second glass and the third, and the fourth.....

nynor 02-24-2011 03:16 PM

any wine hiked into the high uintas is good. even box wine.

scottmandue 02-24-2011 03:19 PM

Dude... doode... duuuuuuuuuuuude...

Even I am too snooty to drink wine in a box!

Friend got back from Temecula... told me about wine tasting and $35 bottles of wine... I was uncorking a $6 bottle of wine,
"Hey can I have some of that?"
"uh, sure."
He liked it!

Bring a box to Beers'.

Nothing wrong with wine in a box.

Get a small hand held aerator and it'll make them even better.

on2wheels52 02-24-2011 03:27 PM

Bota Box Old Vine Zinfandel is my current favorite. Is only a three liter box though.

Black Box is OK. I use it for my less sophisticated friends and family.

Unfortunately, they usually prefer the bottles I bring...

James Brown 02-24-2011 03:28 PM

boxed wines have been making a comeback, same wine as in the bottle (with screwtop or plastic cork) but in an air tight decanter. Lasts longer (unless your scottmandue).
Beer I can get in a 1 gallon plastic dispensers at any brew pub. It's a wonderful life.

I am going to go down to my cellar now & tell my lovelies that bad, misguided people exist in the world . . .

I don't drink the crap in a box but my wife seems to find the Black Box Chardonnay to be palatable, which saves me from uncorking something from France every night, which benefits my wallet greatly.

She was raised in Sonoma county, so she'll drink most anything from California.

huh... that is exactly what i've thought about every boxed red wine i've ever had (about three).

imcarthur 02-24-2011 04:56 PM

Okay you heathens. The first one of you left-coast wine box drinkers that makes it to Toronto when I am 'in house' is formally invited to dinner where we will partake in the pictured bottle (the same small plot of ground as Randy's joke pic). And 1999 was a good year . . .

I am prepared to prove to you, that wine should come out of a bottle.

i've always wanted to go to toronto.....

imcarthur 02-24-2011 05:11 PM

Well, Hugh was a near miss recently. His/my scheduling got in the way - not that I am accusing Hugh of being a left-coast wine box drinker. :D The bottle will sit until I have a taker . . .

Ian

RWebb 02-24-2011 05:15 PM

will the bottle sit upright like that? or at a slight angle so as to keep the cork wet?

imcarthur 02-24-2011 05:20 PM

Horizontal like its cellar mates. And it is French. A truly regal Burgundian although the negociant is not in the hyper-class.

Toronto is nice this time of year :D

Especially compared to Minnesota!

I've had a white zin from a box before, but I don't really consider that wine. More like a wine cooler.

BeyGon 02-24-2011 07:16 PM

I have had wine in a box I will drink but my wife hasn't. I don't mind if she doesn't drink it.

Actually, it pretty much sucks. Snow one day. Deep freeze the next. Dirty snow. Then a melt. Repeat. Wait until May or June. After that we are good until November. ;)

yup - I recognize the label; that was a joke question

Thanks for the offer, and I do like Toronto, but it's a lot cheaper to buy one than to fly!

I actually have seen some decent French wines in boxes. A lot of people are putting more effort into ways to "containerize" wine these days. The rate of corked wines is a killer.

I don't expect us to give up bottles and go back to amphora tho.

teenerted1 02-25-2011 02:56 PM

if you buy it by the case all 12 bottles come in a BOX

Three liter? So what do you drink after dinner?

I have not had a real problem with turned bottles in my 'day' wine consumption. Many $15 Spanish reds. I open them & vacuvin & drink over 2 -3 nights. I did lose a 1999 Les Forts de Latour recently & THAT was painful. :(

Pfft... I'm storing all my wine in sheep stomachs!

Eric Coffey 02-25-2011 03:20 PM

This stuff comes in a "box" and isn't bad at all:

mikehinton 02-25-2011 04:09 PM

Do you guys count the 1-liter packages as "boxes?" I think the name of the wine is Bandit, and it's put together by some people here in the Napa Valley. Good quality for the price, but more expensive than "Two Buck Chuck."

Because of people like you, you just can't get a good haggis these days. :(
