How to adjust your mirrors

Search let me down too...

There was a thread with a link to a video showing how to properly adjust your mirrors, but I can't find it now.

Basically, I've been doing it wrong all along. Set the driver's side mirror so you just can't see the side of your car if you put your head against the window. The other side should be similar - can't see the side of the car if you lean over to look out. Center mirror should have the back window centered, just like grandpa taught you.

The advantage is no blind spots. When a car comes up your side, you catch it in the side mirror just as it disappears from the rear view mirror. Then, you catch it in your peripheral vision just as it's leaving the side mirror.

The down side is that you cannot use the side mirrors to see directly behind you. I didn't realize how much I relied on them when backing down my driveway. Also, with the side mirrors positioned farther out, your peripheral vision picks up cars from a different vantage point. As you pass a car you get the impression it's pulling in behind you.

So, I've had mine adjusted this way for a few weeks and I'm liking it. I'm much more aware of traffic around me. I still turn my head to look before changing lanes, but as yet I have not been surprised by someone in the blind spot.

Oh thank you, Bob! I had also misplaced that link. I wanted to share it with my co-workers.

Thanks!

Yup, been doing that for sometime now but thanks! Seems to me to make the most sense. Use the side mirrors to increase your perif and use your rearview mirror for the rear.

That doesn't work well for my pickup truck. I usually back into spaces, and I need to see the sides of the vehicle on both sides to do so.

I've been doing it for a month or so. Takes some getting used to but it does work.

Yep, did this too, much better now!

I was taught that mirror adjustment technique at the Mid Ohio track several years ago and our entire family now adjusts their mirrors to eliminate the blind spot. It works!

I set my mirrors this way on my truck. It works all well and good except for when my wife is putting on her make up in the vanity mirror, blocking my view of the passenger side mirror and rendering it useless to me...lol

I've spent the last few weeks using this adjustment. It's pretty awkward at first. It's really comforting to not have those blind spots anymore, but backing down my driveway is trickier.

I think I'm gonna keep them this way and occasionally back over the edge of the lawn until I adapt.

I adjusted my in-laws SUV this weekend. My mother-in-law thought I was nuts. "Why are you doing that? You can't see anything like that! Why are you doing it like that!?! (Gawd the shrill still echoes in my cortex...)

"To show my blind spot, outside my perf vis and rear view mirror."

"Why are you doing that? You can't see anything like that! Why are you doing it like that!?!

"Becuase it really does work try it."

"Why are you doing that? You can't see anything like that! Why are you doing it like that!?!

"No really it "

"Why are you doing that? You can't see anything like that! Why are you doing it like that!?!

"But I'm the one driving so... "

"Why are you doing that? You can't see anything like that! Why are you doing it like that!?!

"I am going to shoot myself now. I shall labotomize myself now with a spear gun I have fashioned out of pencils and bungie ties."

"Why are you doing that? You can't see anything like that! Why are you doing it like that!?!

"No, I don't think I have to...it...seems...as...though...I...have...just... popped...a...blood...vessel...in...my ...brain..."

"Why are you doing that? You can't see anything like that! Why are you doing it like that!?!"

"I think I will be dead soon, please give my watch to my son and my wedding ring to my daughter..."

"Why are you doing that? You can't see anything like that! Why are you doing it like that!?!

"Why are you doing that? You can't see anything like that! Why are you doing it like that!?!

"Why are you doing that? You can't see anything like that! Why are you doing it like that!?!
