New Addition to the Family - Meet Indy the Choco Lab!

My Wife fell in love with him. He was found on the streets over a month ago and been in the shelter. He is almost a year old and very well behaved considering he is a Lab and still a pup. Shots and fixed he has a great coat but a tad thin IMO.

He was named Indianapolis at the shelter. I have no clue why. We gave him to our Son for his 12th B-day. So far, after a few hours he has taught him how to sit on command (sorta) and to drop the tennis ball and wait till he throws it. He gets real excited when we walk him - training him to heal is gonna take a little time.

He gets along well with our Rat Terrier surprisingly. She seems to tolerate him to date. Our Son has already rough housed with him - something our Rat just isn't into. Its a good fit!

Nice dog! they are great family dogs. They like it rough.

His coat is amazing! I did notice he has a few flakes - dry skin? His teeth are great. He is being crated at night in the dining room for the next few days then we will move it up to our Son's room. He spent his nights in a crate at the shelter. He doesn't seem to mind it. Of course when he hears the kids he wants to play and get out but thats natural.

Uh Oh.. Another one has fallen to the Labs.

The good news is, I doubt if you will ever find a more loyal breed, and doubly so since he is a rescued dog. They DO know it when you rescue them. He will be just the right height to clear a coffee table with his tail in one swipe, he will be a huge brute that LOVES to wallow on you, and those he loves. Wait until you start feeding him. $$$... Labs are poop factories, and will leave land mines everywhere. They go through a chewing phase, most of them are hard headed and intelligent, even when trained. He will STINK! I suspect the flakes in his coat are from over washing, and drying the natural oils from his coat that make him water proof. He's a dog, and he's gonna smell like a dog. They truly are a go anywhere, do anything breed.

With all that said, you are gonna love every bit of it! You have just brought home the best friend, protector, and buddy your son is ever gonna have. Labs aren't aggressive dogs, but I have yet to see one not stand between his master, and a stranger. They also tend to announce their presence to others loudly, and with a bit of authority.

Good on ya for going to the shelter. I would say I hope all of you enjoy each other, but I KNOW you will!

Nice catch, boy and pup, like to see that. I have a pair of dogs that were picked up off the street.

Do not get a third dog. The start ganging up on each other with more than two.

Daisy says "hello"...

We deed our Daisy "Nature's Recipe Lamb and Rice" that we buy at PetSmart, she likes "PorkChomps" chews and she loves ice cubes and carrots. No table scraps or the dog will get fat and be unhealthy! Our dog is crate trained and she walks into her crate every night or when we're leaving the house for several hours or more. Daisy gets a shower once a week with puppy shampoo, Vitamin E once a day for her skin and coat and Becky brushes her teeth and cleans her ears, too. Great dogs....

...........

I can second that thought. It could also be that he didn't completely dry out after a bath and grew some bacteria under his undercoat.
Shadow is 11 now and when I remarried 5 years ago my new wife wanted him sparkling clean, after she paid the vet bill for skin bacteria a couple of times she quit that and bought a brush.

Good luck with the new family member! Shadow says Hi and winks his thanks!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1298736443.jpg
