Has anyone heard of this guy?

This is a bit like finding that Jesus Christ will be in church on Sunday.

Walter Rohrl enters 2011 Targa Tasmania | Car Advice | Reviews

This will be the third Targa Tas for Rohrl after taking part in the 1997 and 2000 events. He won’t be driving a typical fresh-from-the-factory Porsche 911 either, he’ll be driving a classic from the Eighties.

Walter Rohrl and co-driver, Christian Geistdoerfer, will be driving the same Porsche 911 SC that the pair drove in the 1981 San Remo Rally. The car has been restored and will race for the first time since the famous race 30 years ago. Walter Rohrl said in a recent statement,

“We only entered that 911 SC in one rally, the San Remo. It was a last-minute thing. Some engineers at Porsche helped prepare this car for me because I was without a drive.

“Then more than 25 years later Porsche informs me this fabulous car has been found in somebody’s garage. It has been restored and now we will bring it to Targa (Tasmania) in what will be a very special reunion.”

Rohrl and Geistdoerfer will be driving the car in the classic section of the rally, putting the 25-year-old SC through its paces for 2000km over the five-day event. Rohrl said he is looking forward to driving the car once again.

The car will be one of three specially-restored classic Porsches taking part in the event, including a 908/02 Spyder – a car that won the 1969 Targa Florio – which will be driven by Klaus Bischof, and a 718 RS 60 Spyder – 1960 Targa Florio winner – which will be driven Bernd Ostmann, Editor-in-Chief of Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport magazine.

Targa Tasmania 2011 commences on April 5 and will finish in Hobart on April 10.

Wow, that's almost better than the second coming (and much more real...). Are you going to make it out there to see him? Not as if the trip isn't worth it already, but this sure adds a bit of incentive to dropping everything and making for Tasmania.

Thanks Jeff- Walter Rohrl, "Rallye Driver of the Millenium" steps out in an oil burner on closed roads...I was starting to wonder if it was still a Porsche board....

One of my all-time favorite DVD's is "Walter Rohrl im 911", where he drives an early ('73?) 3.0 liter car in an ADAC rallye. It has something like ten stages, filmed from inside the car. The sights, the sounds, the skill... truly amazing stuff.

other than him having some bad luck..
everyone can try for second place..
that man can drive!

Can he win in a 30-year old car? It's like winning a tennis tourney today with a wooden racket, or a golf tourney with wooden-shafted clubs. As good as the car (and driver) is, it doesn't have the current technology.

Or for you, maybe more like finding the devil in the dining room............ ;)

The co-driver is the spitting image of Bob Varsha.

believe they race in class..
even so..
Walter would spank most folks..
horsepower & tech..is one thing...
give him a well set up ride..
all you will see is tailights...
skill & balls...

He is in the "classic" classification. At that, I bet he still beats most of the serious modern competition.

Sorry Stuart...yes it is still a Porsche board ;)

Have his autograph...on paper and one on of my 911 caps (MY cap - hands off!)...

Years ago, the VW/Audi importer here released a very limited run of videos that included one about the history of the Quattros...the whole development process and their dominance in rallying. I was lucky enough to get a set. Sensational footage of Herr Rorhl at his finest :)...

AUSmotive.com » Walter Röhrl talks about his Porsche 911 SC at Targa Tasmania

Walter's factory SC. Yesterday, in Targa Tasmania, Walter covered 58kms of wet mountain road on Mt Arrowsmith- the longest tarmac stage in the world- in this 82 SC in a time that would would have placed him the top 10 outright (Nissan GTRs, Lambos, GT2s).

Its sounds awful, btw, like a tractor. Goes pretty good tho.
