Tooth crown & "Numbing" Query
 

a crown on a molar popped off (on Friday of course)

My dentist will see me very late on Tuesday to put it back.

BUT, Tuesday is Mardi Gras! And I have some drunken revelry scheduled, starting at 6:30 - said revelry also includes a lot of great food...

SO I want to get a handle on whether he is likely to use anything that will interfere with my sense of taste ("numbing"; local aenaesthesia) OR will interact with alcohol fueled fun and trying to drive home much later ....

crown is Gold; and the tooth doesn't hurt

Trying to assess the probability that he will just do a quick cleaning, antiseptic and then reglue it as vs. something more major.

I find a lot of 'stuff' posted on the Internet of course - but it is mostly about which wax to buy for a temporary repair

Nor will his receptionist be of much help...

Any thoughts?

doubt he will work on you if your toasted..

most likely he will clean it up a bit..

My experience - if the crown comes off and it's off for a while they have to start over. If you immediately stick it back on with Fix-O-Dent until you get to the dentist it's possible to do a clean and re-glue.

Take a look at the crown and the tooth. Does everything look mostly clean? If there is plenty of decay, either in the crown or on the tooth, it may not be good enough to recement. Try to keep the crown back on the tooth also. Your teeth will shift slightly making it harder to just recement. You shouldn't need anesthesia either. If your plans are going to interfere, just tell him to cement it on temporarily if it needs to be replaced. Trust me, Dentist want to get out of work on time also, so they are more then happy to get things done and go home.

Mardi Gras is more important than your teeth.

Is it a root canal tooth? Or crown only?

If it's a root canal tooth he will just clean it up and reglue it. If it's a regular tooth, he will check for decay and probably just re glue it. If more decay, he will recommend a root canal or a fresh appt to re-post and reglue it.

dunno - I let the dentist keep the teeth records...

89911 and Gogar are on the right track. If the tooth is root canal treated you can clean the tooth up without concern for sensitivity... even remove decay if necessary. If you're in a rush, just ask him how it looks and if he feels it needs more attention (ie: freezing) ask him to put it back on temporarily for now.
