Anyone bought the new Victorinox Rescue Tool?
 

I like the look of it (in black not the flouro yellow) and it seems to be aimed at 'escape from car wreck' situations so it's just the type of thing that you would want to have in the glove box.
The seatbelt cutter and the glass breaker look useful if you needed them.

The reviews I have read say they would be better for the rescuer not the rescuee (i.e the person on the outside of the vehicle) and therefore more useful to firefighter / paramedic / rescue personnel.

It is frightfully expensive when compared to other similar sized Victorinox pocket knives with the locking blades - in fact about twice the price!

I can't imagine that there are very many crashes where the driver would be able to reach the glove box to reach a tool to cut the seatbelt.

My thoughts as well. Something like that is better secured within less than arms reach.

we used a spring-loaded 'punch'..too shatter sidewindows..
windshields are a different method all together...
and yes the toys are best used by folks getting you out..

Working on set in the studio biz, everyone has a multi-tool. I've seen them all, with saws, leather punches, magnifying glass, etc. When it comes down to it, the things you use 90% of the time are pliers, knife, screwdriver and (after work) bottle opener.

The Skeletool by Leatherman wins hands down and at 5 oz and around $60 is the way to go. You can also get a 24 bit accesory set for the screwdriver:

Vinman - that is a nice knife. PRT-III model going by their website. How much did that set you back? Abd which part is the "window puncher" they refer to? Is it the little nub next to the seatbelt cutter?

A small Spyderco will cut you from webbing with ease.

I'm a leatherman guy... But I don't mess around with namby pamby skeletool...


leatherman warrants them for 25yrs as well. And they just send a new one when you send them a broken one....

Its an awesome knife! Yeah, the window punch is that point next to the cutter. Just a light tap on the corner of a window shatters it. I dont remember the price we paid, my fire dept purchased them. But I remember they were pretty pricey. I think around $80-90.

Here is my multi tool of choice. My Gerber. Best feature is you can change the tips from needle nose to cable cutters. Great for snipping battery cables.

Still diggin' on the style of that skeletool though...

over the last 15 years i have had a leatherman. since I live in Portland it is very easy to drive out to the factory out by the airport and trade for a new one whenever it starts to get dull. I am currently carrying number 9. several times I have destroyed in service their product and when exchanging for a new one they have had designers come out to ask me about the failure.
