Quad 33 and 303 units
Anyone familiar with Quad 33 and 303 stereo units?
Have the chance to buy these two for $375 or so from a guy and wondering if thats a good deal or not. Condition is good and they work fine. Am buying some speakers from him and he just came up with this as well and I do not know the maker. Thx, Joe

The 34 & 303 are good examples of well-made Brit Hifi from the 70s with the amp (33) being the better sounding of the two. Designed by Peter Walker before his son Ross took over the helm & flushed the company. The price may be a bit stiff - a bit of a cult thing - but they are actually quite good. The company still exists but with Asian owners.
Here is one link with good pictures: Quad I have owned a Quad II power amp & Quad ESL63 speakers in the past & I sold Quad in the late 80s. And yes, I was a victim of Ross's insults on numerous occasions. His most famous quip: "I don't build what people want, I build what they need." Ian

You own a '69 Jag, some old BMW bikes and an '80s 911.
Do you also own an old hp calculator? You might just fit the profile for Quadophilia. It might be worth it as an investment -- I bet they'll be worth a fortune as antiques in a few decades... |

Ian,
Thanks. Looked at it and it was mint but not my cup of tea. If it had been tube type might have jumped at it but not early transistor. Joe

The Quad II power amp is a little gem if you ever run across a decent pair. I had a pair that I bought for silly money in the early 80s. I rewired them but kept the stock caps etc. Speaker choice was the issue since they were only 15 wpc. Of the transistor amps, the 1980s 306 was the best sounding of the lot.
