Anyone want a low mile 968 Conv 6spd?

This is running at auction here in Minneapolis next week. It was taken in on trade at a local Ford/Lincoln dealership, so you know they own it right. This is NOT my car, but I can buy it.

1993 Porsche 968 Convertible
27,860 miles
6 speed

Runs great, no damage, no issues except:
BAD CLUTCH

price?

Porsche-O-Phile 03-11-2011 08:14 AM

I've been wanting one for a while.

The panel gaps near the hood look humongous though - has it been in a front-end crash at some point?

"Bad clutch" is a pretty extensive job on a 944/951/968. If you DIY it'll take a couple of weekends if you're diligent and don't mind it - maybe $1k in parts. If you take it to a shop I think the book on it is about 20 hours. Big bucks.

Ooo, that is tempting, but I have way too many projects on my plate right now. Roughly , what do you think you could buy that car for? Man a guy like me could make some nice coin on a car like that if it was bought right.
I love the 968. I service a couple of them and they are pretty much what the 944 should have been .

Looks OK but how can a car with 27,860 miles on it have a bad clutch?

It's at a wholesale dealer-only auction. So who knows? But I'd guess $4-5K back of retail.

The hood is open

That's not too uncommon

BeyGon 03-11-2011 08:55 AM

A woman owned it??

Shifter 03-11-2011 12:16 PM

Keep in mind that has the two piece bellhousing. No need to drop the transmission to do the clutch.

Beat me to it. I'd much rather do a clutch job on a 968 than on the 924S I used to own.

Porsche-O-Phile 03-11-2011 01:04 PM

That's a plus... Wasn't aware of it (and makes me wonder why the #@&*%!!! they didn't think of that or do it on all the 924/944/951 models previous!)

porsche4life 03-11-2011 03:15 PM

If it was any color but white, I'd be in serious heat....

Brando 03-11-2011 03:28 PM

I'll give ya $500.

HHI944 03-11-2011 03:34 PM

That's a sweet car. There's a red one in my plantation, people always give me funny looks when I get excited about seeing it...

General buyer beware on a 968 with a bad clutch: they have dual-mass flywheels, and typically those need to be replaced if the clutch goes bang. They cannot be resurfaced.

An extra 8 hours of labor for the 944 clutch = the price of a DMF. 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

Nice car, just keep in mind the parts alone are going to approach $2000 to do it right.

Can you substitution the clutch in this car for the simpler Club sport version?

porsche4life 03-12-2011 05:53 AM

Even with a 2k clutch, if you can buy it for 4, it's still a steal

kaisen 03-12-2011 06:03 AM

There is a good used clutch and DMF on eBay for $290 BIN
Porsche 968 parts Flywheel and Clutch Package OEM - eBay (item 180635649097 end time Apr-04-11 15:40:49 PDT)

Or just a good used DMF flywheel for $85
1993 Porsche 968 OEM Flywheel - eBay (item 250753382125 end time Apr-06-11 18:13:32 PDT)

Or a new Fidanza flywheel for $370 (11lbs vs 27lb DMF)
FIDANZA FLYWHEEL Porsche 968 1992-1995 3.0L - eBay (item 120310423088 end time Mar-15-11 10:39:53 PDT)

Couple that with a $670 new Sachs clutch kit
OEM Porsche 968 - Clutch Kit 92-95 - eBay (item 390185750529 end time Mar-17-11 00:41:25 PDT)

So you're $400 to $1100 in parts

Here's a great write-up for the labor involved:
Clutch - Porsche 968

It's a 3-5 hour job

If it went for $4K I'd buy it for my 14 year old son. I don't think it will go that cheap.

What does he get when he's 15? Something with a turbo in it? :)

No, but around here (and most places) $4000 buys you a rusty, boogered up 130K mile Honda Civic DX that's as old as he is.

So why not? Hey, I owned a BMW 2002tii when I was his age
