Ethanol just plain sucks...

I've just finished my first round of mowing, etc. for the year, and I CAN'T believe how bad my equipment ran initiually even though I put fresh gas in all (although I didn't empty the carbs last fall (never have)). I've got pro-grade equipment, SCAG & Stihl, but as of last summer, you simply can't source the non-ethanol gas around here anymore. I dread how the 150 on my bass boat is going to behave next week...

Any airports close by you could buy at?

krystar 03-17-2011 11:42 AM

rejet the carbs, install higher compression pistons...and throw on a turbo. run e85.

Gogar 03-17-2011 12:27 PM

But how do you "feel"?

One obscure benefit of ethanol is that it jacks up the price of corn so dairies across the nation are going out of business because of feed prices. If it keeps up, milk and cheese will not be cheap. I swear . . .

VP started a special line of fuels just because of this issue.
They are finding a big market with first responders who need their tools to work every time.

And this will keep my pilot jets clear in all my carburated engines that sit for a couple months how?

I own at least 50 gasoline burning engines in everything from cars to chainsaws.... effing ethanol sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ethanol is wonderful without all that gasoline in it. I prefer the version that comes in beer.

It sucks as a fuel however.

sammyg2 03-17-2011 02:05 PM

Gasoline is for cleaning parts, ethanol is for drinking, nitro is for burning.

That site "used" to be accurate (for my area) but no more. I live near a "tank farm" that EVERYONE uses, and nothing leaves the tank farm ethanol free any more according to a very reliable source. Early last summer, a few stations around here (listed on that site) were sourcing from "down east" but that dried up too mid-summer. I hadn't thought about an "airport" source...I suspect the marina's (none close by) still source the good stuff, but I'm too "cheap" to pay the markup...I bet I'd cringe at airport prices too :), but I would do that for my small motors. Thanks!

I had to add octane boost just to keep my mower running! Stuff is complete crap!

Tobra 03-17-2011 04:28 PM

There are union 76 stations that sell race gas that is really gasoline, no booze added.

Good idea...I don't know 'bout U76 stations around here, but one station I sometimes use had a pump w/ 100 octane...don't know if the pump is still there though. So race gas is what I need to be looking for? Thanks!

The stuff totally destroyed the fuel system in my waverunner. Literally dissolved the fuel lines in the tank.

944Larry 03-17-2011 06:29 PM

We had this discussion a while back. My solution is to run some Coleman lantern fuel through the carb and engine before shutting the engine down for the winter. Put fresh gas in it in the Spring and she will fire right on up. I don't have a good solution for the crappy way the ethanol runs though. AVgas I guess.

Dantilla 03-17-2011 06:39 PM

I use 100LL Avgas.

No alcohol, and stable over long periods of time.
