i'm hanging it out there with you guys. do you like opera?
Wait, why did I post that?
No, I don't like opera. I've listened to a little. I can't take it. I could maybe see watching a ballet, but opera, oh hell no.

I like much opera music, but I find the whole opera thing to be pretty boring. One the rare occasion that I have attended an opera, I felt trapped.
Best, Tom

This is probably the only opera I've ever listened to.
YouTube - The Who "Tommy" Well, there was a Pastry Chef I worked with once in a very large, old school, brigade style kitchen. The pastry shop was downstairs and at the end of a long tiled hallway. The chef would sing opera while working. His voice would bellow down the hallway, up the staircase and thru the entire kitchen. He was really quite good. The cooks on the other hand would play heavy metal and pipe it thru the intercom down to the bake shop. Those were the days. So, yes, I have enjoyed opera, so to speak.

I love opera, "The Flying Dutchman", "Carmen", "The Barber of Seville", are some of my favorites. Get the libretto so you know the story and listen with an open mind.

![]() Vienna Staatsoper. 4th row Orchestra. Center aisle. Perfect seats. 314€ for 2. Just before the start of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). Opera is an acquired taste. Listening to 2 or 3 hours of German or Italian singing & strutting around can be painful to many. But the music is wonderful & the stories are simplistic so with the right attitude it can be a great experience. But I have only been a to a couple . . . Ian

Good question. No. I don't. However I went to a party in December where a guy stood up and said I am going to sing a song for your birthday present. It was stunning. He is training for opera. An experience that was unforgettable. Made me question my apathy for opera.

Opera is great in small doses for me. I'm there mostly for the music. One of the things about classic opera is that the story line doesn't change (though the presentation/production do). I'd rather watch a different play than go through them again & again. But particular pieces/arias can conjure up the memory of the highlights so I enjoy them more at this point. YMMV

I appreciate the skill and tradition, but I don't care for it. It might have to do with my college years, when I had to be the pianist for countless PITA collegiate opera hopefuls.

just sit back and enjoy the music. knowing the plot to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg will actually detract from the experience.
