Do all BluRay players suck ?

I've had one for a couple years, it took over a minute to boot before it would even let me open the DVD tray. I hated waiting there for the damn thing to open...

So I bought a new one with a good review in terms of boot speed, sure enough it opens the tray in seconds, but..... then it takes even more time "loading" the damn thing, twice as long as the old player... Karma is mocking me... Sometimes it just doesn't even get to the menu at all, you gotta reboot it... Java crap... I'm 0 for 2 so far. Are there any less sucky BR players out there ?

That's just used for Netflix anyway, I refuse to buy the discs at those overinflated prices, except maybe Le Mans ;-)

I will agree that they suck. I bought an LG BD270, which was a cheap non-networked Blu-ray player. It loads quickly, picture quality is great but would freeze intermittently. I had to take off the top cover as it appears that the freezing was due to it overheating. Since then, no more issues.

Blu-ray players seem as if they are full of compromises.

I've got a Samsung that's a little over a year old. The tray will open right away. You don't have to ower the thing on to open the tray. Hit the open button with the power off and the tray opens. Put a disk in and push the tray shut and the player turns on automatically. Occasionally it will take some time to start a disk. I updated the software in the player, and that helped.

P.S. - If anyone has the first season of "Murder She Wrote" or "Matlock" on BetaMax, I'd be willing to pay top dollar.

Look here for the old TV shows. Free Unique Internet Television entertainment-information -enlightenment Has a lot of them, and Sky King comes online in a month or less!

I have the LG BD570 - it has built in wifi - (N) so I can stream netflix - that's a nice feature with the kids - (go to the computer - looks for titles that can be streamed, set the que - and boom - watch a movie)

Loads reasonably fast for blue ray disks. The front panel is a little convoluted - (power switch where you think the tray open would be, tray open where you think power would be)

What I like is you can surf youtube (for Porsche content, of course- some earthquake footage was only available on youtube)

it can automatically update software with the built in wifi - Picture quality - sound is very good.

I'm very happy with my Oppo, you can power it up just by pushing the eject button and it only takes a few seconds to open the tray.

Netflix instant looks like CRAP on every Blu-Ray player I've seen. If you want to watch Netflix streaming video, use an XBox360 or a PS3. You will be amazed at the difference! Plus, the PS3 is about the best Blu-Ray player going.

I've had a couple of issues with my Samsung BD player -- a lot of it has to do with the fact that the BD disks have so much more content on them than a DVD does. And they are constantly adding more functions, so the BD player manufacturers can't keep up with the firmware updates.

In my case, there was an issue with playing the Matrix -- apparently there was no way of turning off the closed captioning, and the movie would start with CC on. I figured out that you had to turn the CC option on (even though it was on), and then turn it off.

Also - my Ironman BD still won't load, despite having up to date firmware.

It is going to take at least a year or two for all this to sort out before it all works better, IMHO.

That's the one I have now, Jeremy. 1/2 the time it won't even load Mad Men, period. I have to reboot it. At least it opens the tray faster, but if I gotta stand up again to reboot it, it's just as bad as waiting in front of it for the tray to open. The streaming is nice, but I already had that with the apple TV.

I'm less than impressed with BluRay technology. Not sure why there is so much OS to load vs. DVD...

Have you done the software update on it? They have released a couple updates and I notice it takes much less time to load after the last two updates (and with LG you have to download the update - then install - two part process)

I have a LG BD570. Overall I have pretty good luck with it from a disc standpoint. The biggest problem I have is streaming netflix video. I have on the LAN and it is a hit or miss on whether it streams the video or not. I usually have to unplug and restart it and it magically starts streaming again.

I may replace it in another year or so once the gen 3 stuff comes down in price.

PS3 is the best blu-ray player around. Plus you get to play Gran Turismo 5 if you want some racing
