Trouble in the neighborhood today.

I was just getting through my second crappuccino and I heard a loud

WHAMMMMM!

similar to the sound of a dumpster when the trash truck puts it on the ground.

Walk outside, dust everywhere and car alarms going off. Hmmmmm.

Apparently a 'distracted' UPS driver traveling north on our street faded to the left and clipped the (parked) South-facing Toyota Van, did a few unsuccessful corrections and decided to abruptly park his truck next to this home on the West side of the street. Whoops!

I guess I'm glad he didn't hit one of the houses. Amazing job of threading the needle at a high rate of speed.

Unfortunately, he had to compound his shame by transferring the contents of his completely full truck into this empty one they pulled up a while later.

Now I'm off watch and see if he'll drive it out, or if they have to get a tow truck.

Phew. That was a close one. Thank goodness it's just the UPS guy. Today I'm waiting on a package that's being shipped via Fed Ex.

I bet he considered it. I got out there about 30 seconds after it happened, and he was freakin. He was on the phone to his boss and hopping around the yard picking up divots and trying to replace them, and making a little pile of the pieces of the flowerbed border that he had knocked over.

The good thing is it was a UPS truck and not some stolen truck. UPS will get to pay for everything.

I hear those drivers only get one accident and then it's curtains for them.

What can brown do for you.

I've also heard it doesn't matter if it was their fault or not, it still counts against you.

Had a UPS driver knock on my door at 8PM to sheepishly tell me he drove straight into the L/F fender of my C2.

$8K in damage. He attempted a 3-point turn in the middle of the road but didn't see my car parked on the street in the opposite side.

Wow - that's pretty nasty - I'll bet he'll have some explaining to do to his boss, probably a career defining moment. Glad no one was hurt. I bet the van (red one) is a write off.

Oh yeah. She's already thinking about new cars.

I just showed our Boulder UPS guy this thread, he said he will hear about it tonight for sure, they make things like this "learning lessons"

so what is the consensus, talking on the phone or looking at his clip board?

He might be able to be a package loader but i'm betting his brown driving days are over.

Setting the GPS is also an option. (If he has one)

I have done defense work for UPS in the past. The drivers are Teamsters and they are extremely well paid. People will leave management positions in the company to take driver jobs. Actually, managers will compete to get offered open driver slots.

The flip side, and the reason they are so well paid, is that their jobs are extremely demanding. UPS has refined package delivery to a science and every driver has to follow the formula to the letter. Drivers get disciplined for things you and I wouldn't consider problems. The union has made the deal that the drivers get high wages in exchange for allowing the employer broad latitude on work rules. There is a grievance procedure and the union will represent this driver, but you can be sure that he's already been fired and the termination will survive the grievance hearing. Not at-fault accidents do count against their record. They do an analysis on whether the accident was avoidable not just whose fault it was. If the driver could have done something to have avoided the accident - it's suspension time. And avoidable can mean that he should have been driving in a different lane. They instruct their drivers to drive in certain lanes (inner or outer) depending on various circumstances. Heaven help the driver who gets rear ended when he's in the wrong lane for the circumstances.

That's why the poor guy was so out of his mind, replacing divots and trying to repair any damage. He was probably fired as soon as he got back to the terminal. After he had to personally transfer the boxes from the wrecked truck to the new one.

Our regular UPS guy seems like a nice guy. I have always heard they are very well paid. There is little doubt thyy WORK hard to get the job done. I have seen our driver drop off a package at the end of a day at our office and he is just soaked in sweat.

He is never there long enough to chat much. Once when we had numerous packages he mentioned he had just went through a divorce. He said he would come home exhausted as usual and just want to relax. His wife wanted to "go drive around" which was the last thing on earth he wanted to do after 12 hours of driving around in traffic except maybe go work out and lift weights.

Yep, one of the highest paid flight crew in the field.

Post-crash drug testing (for truck drivers) would not be applicable because whereas this is a regulated size truck, it is under the CDL threshold. No CDL required, no DOT drug testing.

They could test him under a general policy, but not because he was a truck driver.

This reminds me of the loud bang I heard in the middle of the night 24 years ago. I went down stairs and saw nothing. The next day I noticed that the phone booth in front of the building was gone, tossed into many pieces into the nearby trees.

I had made a few phone calls from that booth - it gave me a chill.

I would expect a drug test would be mandatory following and accident with UPS. Like you said, not from the state issuing the CDL but from within the company.

looks like one HAPPY UPS truck to me...
