If the Austin track needs to be completed by 2012, they'd better get their asses in gear.

In addition, partial financing is from the state of TX to the tune of $250M over 10 years (paid to Bernie). The major financier is Red McComb, owner of Clear Channel and former owner of Minn. Vikings and SA Spurs (deep pockets).

I hope they finish on time, but I have a feeling they won't make it.

Austin, TX – Steve Sexton, former President and CEO of Churchill Downs Entertainment and former President of Churchill Downs, has joined the Formula 1 United States management team as President. Sexton’s appointment strengthens an executive team engaged in creating the country’s finest international motorsports and entertainment center.

So they hired a guy that has run a horse race track that has been there for a 100 years to build a new track. Sure.....

Well looks like the dates are changing which is fine with me. I wouldn't mind going to Montreal in June and then Austin in November.

Lot's of pissed off people though that booked there hotel rooms if the dates actually stick.

Anybody mind putting me up?

tchanson 08-01-2011 03:05 PM

I heard during the Hungary broadcast yesterday that the teams were pushing back on Bernie's proposed schedule changes, as it would mean a series of three back to back weekends at the end of the year.

I pray the November date sticks for Austin. Gives Helmund some breathing room to complete the circuit, and Austin weather is much more bearable in the fall.

Watkins Glen

The home of F1 racing in the US. It should return there. But lack of suitable accomodations will not allow that. Back in the 70's you camped at the track if you were into F1. Today people need luxury accomodations. Bunch of sissys!!!

No. Most people don't demand luxury accommodations. FOCA/FOM (B. Ecclestone) requires min. specs at each F1 venue in order to justify charging the org. committee/group the licensing fees for the event. The highest license/hosting fee thus far is $50M. Not sure about Austin's fee.

How do event organizers partially recoup? Here's the ticket menu for the Belgium F1 race in a few weeks: Official Formula 1 Tickets 2011 - 26 - 28*August 2011 Belgium

Current Euro to US dollar conversion factor is about 1.4

I was at the Montreal Grand Prix in June. The Gold pass was $500 for Thu to Sun for a seat almost in line with the start of the grid.

Can someone that lives in the area give some feedback on local hotels and campgrounds ? I'd like to go to the inaugural race with my sons and just wondering about places to stay for a few days. Thanks

mattdavis11 08-03-2011 07:10 PM

The closest campground, that I know of, is McKinney Falls State Park. The hotels are a few miles farther away. The Omni comes to mind, it's at TX 71 and IH 35. There's another on Governers Row which is next to it, but I forget the name. Buda, Tx has a hotel right next to Cabela's, and that might be a good option.

Bastrop, Tx also has a State Park, you're 20 miles out from the track though. There is also a campground on the Colorado river at 71 in Bastrop, not sure if it's KOA, or what. Bastrop would probably be most like Ga., being amongst the pines. It wouldn't be a bad thing to come in from that direction either, you'll be driving in from the side with the least amount of traffic. It's going to suck arriving from the west.

There isn't squat in Elroy for lodging. It's trailer park city with rusted lawn art everywhere. Most everything in, and just miles east of Austin is a complete eye sore.

I seriously doubt a hotel is going to be built anywhere near the track anytime soon. It wouldn't make sense to build for one weekend of no vacancy. Same goes for restaurants. In a year or two, something might develop if there is reoccurring demand.
