Need a bit of iPhone advice
 

Several months ago I bought an iPhone 4. It's fine but I seem to really use a lot of data mb's due to email I get every day with attachments that are huge. I really only have mail turned on when I'm traveling, but when I do I get all these attachments that eat up my allowed mb's. I prefer the 200mb choice instead of the more costly 2 gig. I really never use 3G to go onto the net. I do that only when I'm on wifi.

Is there a way to get just the written text w/o attachments ? I've looked into the settings window but can't seem to find any way to filter out attachments. Are these emails only counted against you if you open them maybe ?

Hmm, depends I think. Are you attaching to an Exchange server?

With my Exchange account attachments don't automatically download. They only do so when I select the attachment.

Thanks for the reply. I really dunno how to answer that. I'm on Comcast is all I can say. I want attachments at home on my Mac...just not on the phone. I thought there might be a way to turn them off on the phone settings ??? I may have to go to the ATT store or call the Apple store

I'd try apple before ATT....

With my Verizon plan, attachments don't go against my total unless I download them. I often chose not to download and delete or do it later at home. You need to set up your email so they don't download automatically. Once you do that, you can surf and read emails w/o using much of your data plan.

Good advice, but can you do that just for the phone ? I don't mind attachments when I'm home on my computer

Comcast is POP3 only, and that means that you get the attachments as there is no server side storage available to you. You would need an IMAP email provider to get attachment preview to function properly.

In simple terms, with pop3 you get the entire message sent to you all at once. Your phone is the storage device. Using a different email provider that uses IMAP for instance you will get a header preview of whats stored in your server side inbox.

Dunno if the following advice is true or not. I just called the Apple store. They said that unless I actually click (or double click..whatever) on the attachment it's not really downloaded and I'd not be charged. I never try to open attachments on my phone, but something is eating up my allowed data allotment.

Ask them if that same thing applies to POP mail, when you get the right guy he will know the answer.
