Local in running for Darwin Award
it's a college town & chock full of white collar professionals, but...
CROW — A Eugene man accused of crashing his pickup on Territorial Highway and leaving his injured dog at the scene was arrested this morning after he returned to the area with an allegedly intoxicated man who drove into a ditch, Oregon State Police officials said. The dog’s owner, Ryland Smith, 30, was allegedly driving under the influence of drugs when his Toyota Tacoma pickup overturned several times before coming to rest partially submerged in a creek, police said. Smith allegedly fled the crash scene, leaving behind his injured dog. Another person picked up Smith and took him to a Veneta home, police said. Smith then headed back toward the crash scene to look for his dog with Veneta resident Daniel C. Houlihan. Police said they found both men several hours after the original wreck, when Houlihan drove into a ditch. Authorities eventually found the injured dog, although it is unclear if the animal required medical treatment. Smith was lodged in the Lane County Jail on charges of driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, driving with a suspended llicense, hit-and-run driving, drug possession, littering within 100 feet of a waterway, second-degree animal neglect and animal abandonment. Houlihan, 55, was jailed on charges of driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and recklessly endangering another person. |
