Kitche Under Cabinet Lighting

Is there something better, yet cheaper, than the Kichler lights?

I'd like to get LEDs

I guess I went low rent with simple Hampton bay puck lights running Xenon bulbs. I wired them into the existing 110v line that fed 3 florescent under counter lights and also ran extras along the top of the cabinets (2' ceiling clearance). I have a total of 14 or so. Bulbs last ~ 6 months and cost $5/ea. Dramatic difference.

You can buy stand alone battery powered LED puck lights.

I like the look of under and over lights on seperate switches. Gives you more options.

I've used florescent lights, but the light was harsh. Halogen lights put out a LOT of heat, look decent, but bulbs seem to burn out quickly and are expensive.

LED's might be interesting.

I have some mini fluorescents. They work well, are not too expensive, and are low profile. They are easy to find. I think mine came from an electrical wholesale outfit.

I specifically wanted line voltage lights as hiding the transformers for the 12v was kind of a pain.

Have fun,
Larry

If I can't find it locally from my cabinet suppliers, we often buy a lot of this type of stuff from a company call Outwater plastic and architectural Products. They carry LED lights for your under your cabinets. All the lights can be connect with only one power source running into to the first light. I like xenon lights a lot. Not too bright so it isn't harsh. Best of all, they don't run hot. I find LEDs too white.

I put two P7035 and one O7034 in my kitchen a couple years ago - Xenon, like them just fine. Picked them up at Home Depot.

I bought the W.A.C. InvisiLED tape lights. Nice, but expensive. Stupid waste of money.

Had the halogen puck lights with transformers, hated them because of the intense heat (several had burned fingerprints on them) and transformers were ugly.

Changed over to the fluorescent puck lights (Home Depot brand IIRC), they're great and very inexpensive compared to LED (which were hard to find). Low heat, lots of light. I think they were about $5 each, and very simple to install.

We did this under the cabinets as kick trim lights. Works like a charm on that application.

I bought a set of these at Target a few weeks ago to give them a try. I am quite impressed with them and I am going buy a few more next time I am there. Our kitchen is blue with dark blue / black granite countertops. The bluish white LED lights actually make a nice color effect when they are on under the cabinets.

I've got the xenon under counter similar to the ones in DARISC's picture. They do what they are supposed to and do it well.
My favorite lighting product is the led rope lights in the link provided. They are almost flat so can go into many tight spaces. Remote controlled with an almost infinite color combinations. Many uses, I use mine to backlight a tv and also to use as an accent light as a wall wash. The color change function can be set to slowly fade green to red, my wife like this at xmas for the festive look.
The price on these blew away others and the flexibility is a winner. Two thumbs way up.

I forgot about the rope lighting. I've used that as well, plus it works well in tray ceilings that have crown at the bottom.

We had xenons put in, and we do not like them. They generate a lot of heat, to the point of melting chocolate that was stored in one of the cabinets.

Go LED of some flavor.

I'd recommend the Sea Gull Ambiance system. Very easy to install and very versatile. Put the bulbs right where you want them and at whatever wattage you want.

We just went with the standard Kichler 4 months ago. We wanted their LED's but way too much $$$ for us. Plus the Kichler's fit better under our cabinets than other brands sold at Lowe's and Home Depot. They do generate heat but, WOW, do they look great.
