I read that last night. With the guns and ammo locked up, I wonder if he brought his own spoon.? Scary thought in such tight quarters.

All U.S. Navy ships have a Post Office of one size or another, manned by Navy personal.

Well once we pull in Port, and upon returning from a shutdown a decide to go by the bridge. 3 FNC1 loaded were still in their rack (not lock). Obviously the Special Sea Duty men Boatswain was in a big hurry to go ashore...

Had the Chief Boatswain piped to the bridge. He was a bit surprise that a junior PO had the gulled to having him piped until I pointed to the rack... Drank on his chit all week-end

Yes, in our Navy not only we have a post office but we got bars (hard stuff & wine) and beer machines. Only wine & beer at sea.

I think since I left in 1999, they change the rules. No alcohol when deployed in a war one like Iraq & Libya except during a Banyan.

Submarine shooting leaves U.K. sailor dead - CBS News

I love how every time something bad happens, the media feels the need to recap everything else that's happened to the boat in the last few years. "The boat has been dogged with problems," they say. (sigh) If the boat of the article hasn't been "dogged with problems," then they'll list problems related to the port, the service, or the entire organization. "The Department of Defense has suffered a spate of recent incidents," they'll say.

The other great part about these is that they often close with some totally useless line about submarines. "The nuclear reactor on board the HMS umpty-fratz allows them to remain at sea undetected for months on end." What does that have to do with the shooting?

(shakes head) If there was another way to get news ...

I served on two Ohio Class Subs and can't recall ever seeing a post office in either one. We did have a mail bag that a yeoman would take to a post office when we were in port.

Same here... The Met Office double up as the "Post Office". We had a limited supply of the Post Office tools; Scale, Stamp, Registers & the "cancellation" hammer.

The mail was either transfer during a Jaskstay with a supply ship, delivered by chopper or waiting for us on the jetty.

Less likely in the UK, but not impossible.

He had an SA80.. the standard military assault weapon for the British Forces..
The one issued as a matter of routine to the guard detachment when they are docked in non-mil basins...

So its possible that as an armed sentry he took previous grudges to the next level...
