Ft Worth pelicans

Hi All,

we are considering a possible move to Ft Worth. How active is the local PCA region for autocrosses and track days? Any good fishing and mountain biking in the area? We would like to be close to the zoo if possible, what neighborhoods do you like? We don't have any children outside of the German Shepherds so schools aren't of a huge importance. I imagine taxes have to better than CA? TIA

Not sure how active the PCA is in DFW.

Fort Worth is pretty big so lots of choices/options.

Not overly familiar with it but my impression is the area around the zoo is nice.

No state income tax which is a huge plus.

Property taxes should not bother you coming from CA.

Lots of lakes for fishing.

Good Luck

I want to say the Porsche Club is pretty active, tho I'm not a member.

PCA: Maverick Region

I'll ask a few friends who are into biking what they say.

Ft Worth is a good town. Not San Diego but the day to day living is good. A bit of a traffic problem around Rush Hour.

PCA is active.

Two local tracks Motorsports Ranch and Eagle Canyon. Both membership + rented to clubs. Also some DE events at Texas Motor Speedway (non PCA).

Autocross and time trial also active.

Ft Worth is a bit more casual that Dallas, it is after all where the West begins.

Housing while being down, never had the big run-ups and drop of Cali.

Near the Zoo would also be near TCU.

If you like Bass fishing, lots of lakes. Not so much fly fishing.

A lot of bikers, most road bike some mountain bike, but we have no mountains.

Taxes are lower than Cali.

Lived in Ft. Worth from 1981 - 1991. Loved it. Would move back in a heartbeat if opportunity presented itself.

Their club put on a great Porsche Parade a few years back. All the folks we met there were very cordial.

The DFW area has a big Porsche following, as mentioned above, see the web site and read their newsletter. Tons of activities and events. Look at the tracks sites
Eagles Canyon Raceway
MotorSport Ranch - Performance Car Country Club
They also have events at this facility
Texas World Speedway
Many good shops and great people, best of luck !

Probably the closest "mountains" are going to be in SE and SW OK... I would gladly go hike around the Wichitas with you.... The Pelican group down there seems great. If you make the journey up to OKC we run autocross a little differently due to our track location. We use the Sheriffs training center, so our autocross as a few banked curve and some esses...

I live in Keller which is almost exactly between Fort Worth and Dallas. I much prefer Fort Worth to Dallas, personally. Zoo area is very nice but a bit pricey. TCU is also in that area, as stated earlier in the thread. If you don't have to live within the FW city limits, I certainly recommend my area. Keller, Colleyville, Grapevine, etc are all very nice areas and housing costs aren't too bad. Commute to downtown Fort Worth is about 25 minutes from my house. Southlake is nice, but very pricey and property taxes are high.

Not sure about the PCA around here, I haven't joined myself. There is the Texas Motor Speedway about 15 minutes from my house but I have not heard of any Porsche events there yet. Overall we are very happy here, lots to do. Texas Rangers are about 20 minutes away as are the Cowboys. Speedway nearby. Lots of lake fishing, not much river fishing. We went skiing in New Mexico over spring break, about an 11 hour drive to the mountains.

Hope that helps.

I'm about 30 min form Ft Worth and Dallas! Here are a few homes they just built in my hood. Still plenty of lots to build to suit!

Here is my place and across the street is a nice little duck pond and trails to walk you dog...

And FWIW, Highland Village was ranked #2 in all of North Texas to live in dues to quality of life, schools, access to highways, inferstructure...

Thanks for all of the input guys,

I truely appreciate it. It looks to me like you can get a whole lot more home and property for your money out there. I have visited DFW many times for business and have always enjoyed how polite the people are relative to CA. The longest I have ever spent in TX was when I'd visit my father in Plano years ago. Sadly, mostly I visited him during summer break, the heat and humidity I still remember. My wife and I have a lot to think about and discuss, San Diego will be very hard to leave. I would miss my ocean fishing, off road trails and the ability to ski and surf on the same day if so motivated. I'll look into all the areas mentioned, thanks again.

John,

You should contact Ed Hughes on this board "efhuges3", he now lives in San Diego and moved from DFW.

Just as a point of reference (keep in mind Waco is CHEAPER than Ft Worth, but not always much), we had a guy sell his one car, one bath, two bedroom condo in a nice area in LA (I don't remember where) about eight years ago. He moved to our facility in Waco and used the proceeds from his sale to buy a 1 acre lot with a 3000+ sqft home in a very nice area south of Waco.

Do some cost comparisons. Rush hour can be bad, but nothing like Southern Cal. Property taxes will be higher in the big city and nicer burbs but should not be as bad Southern Cal. No income taxes!!!! Beach is a long way away. Fault line runs west of you an hour or so and is very inactive.

You might want to be more specific about the part of town where the job is located. Southern Ft. Worth will open up different housing options than say, up near the Motorspeedway north of town. Ft. Worth is VERY spreadout. Very friendly.

I'm originally from Houston. Dallas and Houston people do not generally like each other until they get over a beer or a car or something important like that.

I lived in the DFW area until I was 11 and still go back to visit every other year or so. That place has exploded in development. Our old town had 2700 people when I lived there. Now it's 30k. I've been there for business a few times in the last few years and the traffic is unreal compared to how it was when I was a kid. It's way worse than San Diego, which I also visit often. People are definitely friendly and cost of living is lower. I always say TX is the only other state I could live in. It's a great place. But man, I can't deal with that traffic.
