Took the GS plunge with a bonus

I've been researching dual sport bikes for a few months. I currently have a 93 VFR and two CR250R dirt bikes that my 18yo son and I use but not very often. I've had an itch to do some traveling with both kids now in college and after a divorce and a few failed relationships. Peart's Ghost Rider tales speak to me on a few levels and I dislike the whole aspect of non plated dirt bikes and trailering them everywhere.

So, I was looking at V-Stroms and GS's. I had settled on a GS1150, pre 2002 to avoid BMW's servo braking system. During that search a pristine, well farkled V-Strom popped up locally. With my son in mind and not yet having found a GS I jumped on it. It's a great bike, original meticulous owner and well set up. Just missing some luggage.

Then, of course the ultimate GS pops up on the other side of the country. 2002 GS1150, original owner who's a mechanic. Extremely well set up with Jesse Bags, 1100 plastic tank, supplemental tank, seargent seat, piaa lights, h&b bars, the list goes on. 22,000 original miles and he's just finished tearing it down and inspecting everything. Selling due to health issues. I'm flying out in May to ride it back across country. Very excited.

The dirt bikes will be sold and maybe the VFR. My son is taking the MSF course in a month and we'll hopefully get a trip in this summer to Montana

Am happy with my GS. Like you I wanted to avoid the servo 'problem'. Found a loaded '05 without ABS for a good pretty good price.
There could be a V-strom in my future as well.

My '05 did not have ABS. I think the previous generation looks very cool, but the newer ones are a lot lighter.

I'll be interested to weigh this bike. The combination of plastic tank (original is stored and will be shipped with other parts) removal of ABS system and removal of the cat has shaved some weight but I'm sure it's still heavier than a 1200. This route was a bit cheaper and the 1150 is simpler than the 1200 in terms of electronics. I do love the look of the 1200 as well and they seem to have a great reputation.
