Hey McLovin...you still holding Kinder Morgan?

Just got online to check some things...

KMP's been one of my "core holdings" for a decade now...solid performance through "thick & thin", but I sure didn't expect this...WOW

I don't get it - up 17+% yesterday at close, but downgraded by S&P from a four star to a three star?
Someone please explain?
Thanks

When I posted this yesterday morning, it was only "partly" because of the pre-market spike (approx. 25%)... although that made me happy, that's not unusual for many stocks. No longer get CNBC so I haven't heard what any of the "talking heads" had to say. What I do know is that Kinder Morgan was one of the first MLPs (which McLovin and I have discussed before), and they were/are a SOLID income stream for me...the landscape has changed...for better/worse, I dunno yet. I couldn't give a rip about downgrades, but maybe it's because where it goes from here is anybody's guess??? I dunno...my crystal ball ain't never worked . I'll have to decide if I still keep this one for the long haul (probably will)...just don't know yet.

They're flat wrong just as much as they're correct imo....they may "know" what they're talking about, but I still like to call my own shots and do so with no regrets even though they get paid millions to "talk"

You're joking, right?
Pretty sure KMP income/dividends must be filed as on owner/partnership type holding. Another whole 1040 endeavor by itself.

I havent read all the details but it sure looks like some cap gains or other distributions because of the sale. However, I am not sad to see the end of the mlp if only because of the K-1. Maybe it's just me, but for a small time investor with some shares of an mlp a K-1 is too complicated.

Yep, still holding it, along with a 3 other MLPs.

Been hanging on for years, reinvesting the (substantial) dividends.

Well into the 6 figures on those now!

I've always kept my MLPs inside a tax sheltered account avoiding all that crap, though I know there are restrictions on how much/many MLPs you can do that with before the IRS don't like it . I also import all of my non sheltered brokerage activity directly into TurboTax....easy peasy that way now...wasn't always the case.

Good for you! Still holding "the fruit"? After the pain you went through, I hope it finally ripened up enough for ya . I'm letting it all "ride"....though I no longer reinvest the dividends as of a couple of years ago....good luck to all!!!

Glad you figured that out. I've tried to do the same but Turbo Tax never completes the k-1 correctly. Each time I've checked it, several fields were blank.

Naw....I just avoid the K-1s by keeping MLPs in a sheltered account. May not work for everyone, but works for me....YMMV.

yep, still have it! Almost up to $700/share, which isn't bad, got in all between $450 and $550 (most closer to $450), so it's good! I have no plans of selling no matter how high it goes.

I suppose KMI can look like an issue or an opportunity based on your time perspective.

My strategy is to keep an adequate supply of cash reserves that will last 5+ years and to ignore short term equity fluctuations. Took a beating on bond funds a couple of years ago when interest rates rose....NO WAY, NO HOW will I be exposed to bond funds these next few years....YMMV. Individual bonds are a different matter entirely, but I don't go there either....maybe I should ?

Got absolutely crushed by Kinder Morgan.

First, their bogus "merger" transaction that triggered a big tax consequence.

Then cutting the dividend 75%.

Then the price plummeting.

It's only one of 5 MLPs that I have, but it's KMI/KMP has been a loss well into the 5 figures in the past few months.

I wish I would have taken the option to sell it for $42, rather than roll it over into the new company, last year.

It's going to be a long time before it hits $42 again.

This year will be a bloodbath in the market.
