Six pack or a bottle of wine was 99 cents. Cigs were forty cents per pack.

vonsmog 04-20-2011 01:22 PM

It was about 40 cents a gallon when I started to drive. But my family owned an oil company with about 16 stations, so I never had to pay! Just went to the warehouse in town and pumped my own from there! I can remember my grandfather getting so mad at me and my three brothers for not writing down how much we pumped! Tank would go dry and he would be pissed. Boy those were the days, never had to worry about fuel cost and getting premium for free. We sold the oil company and all the stations when I was in college, so away went that wonderful perk! I tell my kids about it and they can't believe how good we had it as kids!

Lowest I ever saw was $0.13 a gallon during a gas war in Blue Hole, SD in 1970 on my way out west from Ft. Belvoir, VA to Ft. Lewis, WA. And I had just filled up my 1968 VW in the last town at $0.29 a gallon. Got about $0.09 of gas 'cuz I just had to stop!

Hugh R 04-20-2011 01:41 PM

In 1970, when I was 16 y/o, I paid as little as 17.9 cents/gal. Normal was more like 25 cents. Yep everyone chipped in a quarter or two and we'd ride around in my 59 Chevy Bel Air all night.

Henry Schmidt 04-20-2011 01:48 PM

I remember 19 cents a gallon at a new fangled place call "Coin Opp".
It was a self service station that used token or a quarters to operate the pump.
We collected bottles to buy gas and "Sunshine" the orange verity.
4 gallons of gas got us to the beach and "Sunshine" took us to an entirely different place. SmileWavy

Oh yea, I forgot about all the S&H green stamps you got with a fill-up.

But then, I can also say I had a brand new '65 Pontiac G.T.O. :)

Then there were "gas wars"...a surplus of gas had prices being cut all over town...think I remember 17.9 cents for regular.

When U were a kid it was still horse and buggys..

Looks like Sidney's $3.50 won't be topped or that John's 13 cents will be bettered.

BTW, I was filling up gas nearby Chimney Rock in North Carolina several months ago and the gas station had one of those really old pumps with the lever on the side.

I got out to fill up the car and was absolutely confused. I couldn't swipe my credit card nor were there any buttons on the pump!

My dad just laughed at me.

I remember my Dad handing those out at his Chevron Station

R K T 04-20-2011 02:49 PM

$2.50......Not for a gallon.....to FILL the tank in my VW bug.

azasadny 04-20-2011 03:12 PM

1977, I believe gas was $1.30 a gallon but we had to wait in lines at the gas station to get it!

on2wheels52 04-20-2011 03:27 PM

I remember the Gulf commercial where the guy with his girl friend pull into the station and ask for 25 cents of Good Gulf. The attendant puts it in and does the windshieldwashingcheckingoiland tiresthing...... The kid tries to get him to stop but he does it all. They dig through their change and come up with another 25 cents to buy.

.19 in high school. But I was buying gas for karts and mini bikes 5 years before that. I can't remember any cheaper.

What's a movie? I bought a 45 RPM record each week for .99. iTunes is what, .99 these days?

wdfifteen 04-20-2011 03:42 PM

The lowest I remember was about 25 cents. Stations around here would have gas wars and give away collector drinking glasses and stuff to get you to buy their gas. Station attendants always pumped the gas for you and "checked your dipstick" (checked the oil.)
I had a 1960 VW Beetle and the gas filler was under the hood. You lifted the hood and an automatic prop held it open. The attendants didn't have any trouble getting it open, but to close it you had to lift it first to unlock the prop (like a 356). Way too many attendants just leaned on it until the hood bent, so I would jump out of the car to close it so they didn't bend up my hood. One time my girlfriend was driving and just as I jumped out to grab the hood, he asked her, "Can I check that dipstick for you ma'am" She said, "No, it's OK. He always acts like that." That was 45 years ago.

.79 cents at the Beacon in Carmichael...I will never forget the day. Five bucks would go a long way in my 69 VW bus!

I'm now seeing gas well over $4/gal here in the Seattle area.

I feel your pain, it's getting close to $4 a gallon here too. It was $3.90 last week when I filled up.

EdT82SC 04-20-2011 04:35 PM

When I started driving it was .85, but I remember paying .75 not long after that.

widgeon13 04-20-2011 04:38 PM

$.25 / gal., would I kill to see that again.

944Larry 04-20-2011 05:16 PM

And a lot of 356's were messed up as well. Funny, they never seemed to have trouble with the Corvette.

Joeaksa 04-20-2011 06:00 PM

.18 or .19c a gallon when I was in high school.

Then when I was working overseas in Saudi it was about .10c a gallon but thats not a realistic cost as the govt supports it.

A930Rocket 04-20-2011 06:07 PM

I want to say $.50 a gallon back in 1977.

fingpilot 04-20-2011 06:16 PM

I can remember working a station in college, and there was a BIG deal as the dealer had to buy pumps that were capable of going over a dollar a gallon! The signs out front too!

A dollar a gallon! What was the world coming to!

pwd72s 04-20-2011 06:37 PM

I just paid $4.10...but it was 92 octane NO ALCOHOL premium...

Around 80 cents for me, we would pool our money for surf trips, but I remember 15 cent Miligan burgers:D

Evans, Marv 04-20-2011 09:11 PM

Gas was in the 20 cent range when I was in H.S. and less with the gas wars. I remember putting $1.00 worth of gas in my tank at a time. I started working in a Richfield station at 15 1/2 yrs. old after school & on weekends. It was normal procedure to ask if the customer wanted to fill the tank and then wash the windshield, check water & oil, tire presure, etc even if they didn't want the tank filled. We gave green stamps. Mondays were slow, so the owner started offering double green stamp on Mondays, and it became the busiest day for gas. At that time the premium was 100 or 102 octane, if I remember right. I was advertised to have TCP as an additive. When I asked the owner what TCP was, he replied it was "Tom Cat Pee."

targa911S 04-21-2011 03:40 AM

.19 a gallon for regular.

carreraken 04-21-2011 08:40 AM

$0.30 a gallon, back when my first job paid $1.89 an hour...

Mike Andrew 04-21-2011 09:12 AM

About $.031 for regular & $.34 for premium. When I worked at a Standard station, I used to do the hose stretch when I closed and got a bit of free fuel for the 305 Scrambler.
During my misfit hoodlum days, I siphoned lots of gas and will never forget the taste.

Yes. My mom got them at gas stations and then bowling. I got my first clock radio with blue chips when I was 14.

barryr 04-21-2011 09:20 AM

When I purchased my 911 in 82 I would roll into the station on fumes, fill up with premium, get a pack of smokes and some change back from $10.00!
Still have the car but my smoking and cheap gas are long gone. (but I am going to Cuba next week so we will see about the smoke):)

NotaBRG, my first hourly job paid $.90/hr. I'd go back to those rates as long as prices in general matched. For instance the house my parents bought when I was in 8th grade was $19K. Gas prices were down around the .20 to less than .30 for a long time during those days.

I know when I first started driving I was making $2.25 and hour. I don't want to go back to that...

My 1st started at $3.35 an hour, but it wasn't long before I was making ove $4:D a month or so, then bumped again :D

Barry, hook a brother up when you get back from Cuba...

sc_rufctr 04-21-2011 10:18 PM

About 34 cents per liter. (1983) :(

johnco 04-21-2011 11:07 PM

"During my misfit hoodlum days, I siphoned lots of gas and will never forget the taste"

yep, it does taste bad.. but not that bad. when you get a mouth full trying to get it going, start to gag and accidently suck in another mouthful...and then gas comes goes up your sinuses and out your nose... you'll know what bad really is. you'll remember it for a few days

MrNvgtr 04-22-2011 03:23 AM

In 1994 when I turned 16, I think I remember it being about 0.92/gal. I remember the shock of paying for my first tank of gas. About $20 - $25 or so.
