On my commute, it's not unusual for the left lane to be 75% full and the right lane to be 25% full. And I'm talking about light steady traffic at 6am. Consequently, I do most of my passing in the right lane. I'd expect folks to move left if possible so folks trying to merge onto the freeway can more easily merge, and to not disrupt the flow of traffic by the folks that have not yet gotten up to the speed of the flow of traffic. But most folks just naturally gravitate to the left lane. I've seen some folks that will shoot across all lanes as soon as they get on the freeway to get to the left lane, but then just want to trundle along.
I think people feel safer in the left lane. Most freeways are divided by hard barriers, so the left lane is "protected" on the driver's side of the car. They also don't have to worry about other cars merging in and out of their lane as often. |
This makes twice I've seen the police pay attention to someone driving slow in the passing lane. Twice in 44 years of driving.

The kids are idiots for ... passing that car on the right?

Mausram, you may be right but honestly if you are not a "right lane pass" guy, you (the guv) might as well invest in only a single lane road. To make it even more absurd, make it divided, so there is no passing at all. I've passed on the right before, but it always makes me vaguely uneasy. (does he see me?) The reg's are there, but there is no will because I believe the authorities believe slow is better, no matter where you are. Cheers

The cop had already forced him out of the passing lane. Why follow him for two more lane changes then speed off and not issue a ticket? Oh,ok to make make the point...which was again?

Drivers Ed 101- Slower traffic keep right.
Even cops are human and get pissed at obliviots. |
A lot of people today don't seem to understand the concept of 'fast lane' / 'slow lane' on the freeways - they are oblivious.
I drove on the highways in Europe many years ago and they only used the fast lane when passing and immediately moved right after passing the vehicle - imagine that! |
That looked like Rt 80, my daily commute. The driver was lucky as I've seen that maneuver more than once resulting in ticket for not stayingright. It is very very often a Pennsy driver getting lit up.

WOW, that was a beautiful thing to witness! Never thought I would EVER see that happen in NJ! I was beginning to think that I lived in a parallel universe where the current drivers manual states the left lane is now the slow lane and the right lanes are for passing. Sorry to say, but seems in NJ and eastern PA, driving slow in the left lane is more the rule than the exception. Its like these folks get some sort of divine calling that if they drive slowly in the left lane they will get to where they are going safely. Mean while everyone around them is crashing into each other. It's just nuts not to mention dangerous. Happy trails!

When I regained control of my bike I dropped it down a gear and sped off doing about 100 mph in a 40 to get away from the assassins. They did not give chase. Funny video, but it can go wrong. |

In Germany after the Berlin wall was taken down, stinky and slow Trabant drivers were a nusance to the W. Germans. On the abahn, a tactic was having 2 or 3 westerners hand signal each other to gang up and surround the Trabant driver and force them off the first exit. No mercy. Would be fun to see this done in the states.
