1984 Mercedes Benz 280SL

I recently purchased a nice 84 gray market 280SL a good price, or what I think is a good price. I plan to sell it after a couple of weeks for fun. It is a great looking 10 footer (that is better than a 20 footer). I really don't know how to price it as I've not found any of these on ebay, auto trader, craigslist, etc. Low end on NADA is around $13k. Anyone know what these cars are worth and don't make me an offer of $500! lol

I have no idea what they would be worth in the States but $13k sounds a bit rich.
They're worth about $6,000 locally for a good one.

But as always any MB convertible seems to demand ridiculous prices. Recently I saw an "American Gigolo" one go for $35,000. (1980)

6K? Seriously? An SLC perhaps, but I don't think you can get a good SL for that kind of money in Australia. More like 20K, I would think.

If you can find me a 'good' one for 6K, I think I'll buy it.

The 280SL is powered by the very appealing 2.8L TWIN CAM 185hp inliner and is not much slower than than 350SL (Europe and ROW only)...if it is in good shape I say an easy $7K.

Bear in mind a 120K mile 560SL from say 1986 sells for around $10-$13K in decent shape, and the 560SL is far more desirable.

Oops. I was thinking of the sedan. I owned a 1984 280 SE. (sedan)

Not many good one left around here. I've seen a few in the 7-8k range that were good/decent.

ooo..tough one. If it were a 380 or 450SL you would have a slight advantage...

An excellent example is around 8-10k for a guy looking for one.
A 20 footer or one with high mileage is worth much less.
Does the A/C work? Power steering rack leak and make noise? Wood in the console cracked?

Enjoy the car and think about keeping it...or..pimp it out with 20" rims and it will probably sell to a "playa" in Atlanta.

My mom has an 84 380SL that is rarely driven. It hasn't seen the road more than 800 miles in the last year. The thing had a full resto about six years ago including a bare metal re-paint, new interior, new top, new a/c, new power steering rack, etc., etc., etc. Totally CHERRY! It is only valued at around 10-12k..the resto cost more than that...my dad just shakes his head...

No worries. Old mercs are definitely hit by fuel prices. I sold a 126 coupe last year for under 5 k. It needed paint and was an import, but still: Ouch

I'll disagree with you there. I know that I would prefer a 280 to a 380. ...esp with gas prices where they are. Beyond that the 280 will be quite a bit lighter up front (still a tank, but a bit less piggy)

Yeah, and if your not a little guy, with the early SL's, you get to sport around town looking like a bear in a circus car.

No doubt..the 380's and 450's are HEAVY....but, they sure ride well on the highway.
I'm sure the OP got a great car and will enjoy it.

I always had a soft spot for those cars. Interested in a well set-up 944 in trade?

My Dad has a 560SL in a light gold color that he's going to sell. Having drove it I would not want one - heavy and a gas hog - but admittedly I have been crusing Craigs list, Ebay, and auto trader with dreams in my head of owning a '68-70's 280 SL. Right up there with the 3.0 BMW...classic lines and sexy.

Then today I was waiting for my son to finish his training class and wandered over to a place called Cavollo Motors. They had a nice '79 SC in silver/black. I sat in it and was immediately IN LOVE. I have to get my butt into another 911 soon. That example was (IMO) way over priced but the fire is stoked.
