I think AWD / 4Motion is over-rated. Get snows when you need, them, and save fuel the other 95% of the time.

Is the VW wagon available there as a diesel? That would be my choice. The new DSG wagon is a very nice car. And cheap to drive. Fuel cost has to be a consideration, who knows what you will be paying in a few years.

I was not convinced of AWD's advantage either. However, owning a subaru in a winter wonderland when it's snowing like crazy and the roads have not been plowed also offers significant ground clearance advantages as well as a (real) limited slip rear diff (I don't think the base model got this). Get dedicated winter tires on top of it all and 90% of snow events become less intimidating. We get 23 (winter)-27 (summer) mpg in our non-xt outback. Gotta love salesfolk who round that to "almost 30".
