Heads up .380 owners

The ammo company Buffalo Bore is now offering Barnes TAC-XP solid copper hollowpoints (as used in the Corbon DPX line) in .380+P.

These are by far the most capable "barrier blind" .380 bullets on the market- completely proven in the big game hunting world over the last couple decades,.

Buffalo Bore now loads them in .380+P 80fps hotter than anyone else. In .380 the Corbon DPX and identical Doubletap Barnes TAC-XP round at 1050fps from an LCP/P3AT/TCP/P380 only penetrates about 8-9" in 10% ballistics gel. IMO, this is insufficient penetration for self defense requirements.

The Barnes TAC XP hollowpoint is solid copper and will not break apart under any circumstances, so the extra 80fps will equate directly to extra penetration. This round should break 10" of penetration without breaking up or fragmenting, the only expanding .380 hollowpoint on the market to do so.

The Corbon/DT .380 Barnes loadings get on average .645" expansion in the 10% gel tests i've seen, which is phenomenal.

The solid copper Barnes TAC-XP is also a "barrier blind" load, offering excellent penetration through various tactical barriers like auto glass and interior walls. Most .380 hollowpoint rounds fall flat on their face vs. these sorts of barriers.

Previously i'd been carrying Buffalo Bore .380+P hard cast lead flat nose rounds because they were the only non FMJ round in .380 i trusted to penetrate deeply enough. I think this new load will finally make hollowpoints in .380 a viable option.

I ordered 60rds of the new BB Barnes +P ammo today. It's actually cheaper than the less powerful Corbon DPX to boot.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll look into it. This may be some new food for the PPK!

.380?

I think I'd rather pull out the pellet gun first. It is probably more powerful-

Just out of curiosity....but I don't see any listing of an actual Porsche in your signature. You do still own a 928, yes?

While not agreeing with Normy....IMHO the .380 is a pimp's gun.....

Buffalo bore .380+P is much more powerful than standard pressure .380 ammo, and easily matches the energy levels of .38 special +P fired from a J frame revolver.

It's not .45, .40, or 9mm+P+ JHP, and it never will be, but I certainly don't want a 10" deep .645" diameter hole in me.

That's the kind of performance that can be expected from this new Buffalo-Barnes solid copper hollowpoint load. That kind of expansion/penetration is light years ahead of traditional .380 JHP performance.

Here's a direct link:

BUFFALO-BARNES 380 Auto +P Pistol and Handgun Ammo

It's in the "Buffalo Barnes Unleaded" line.

I hope BB comes out with 9mm copper hollowpoint Barnes +P+ as well. I will switch to that in a heart beat.

Buffalo Bore+P has much heavier recoil than standard .380 (though still perfectly manageable IMO), so wear and tear will be accelerated. I personally shoot expensive high power +P ammo when i switch to it in the beginning to verify functionality, then load it in the pistol only as self defense ammo. Then I'll fire off a mag every so often to keep familiarized with the recoil and point of impact.

Continue to use regular old practice ammo at the range.

Good info Snipe!

A .380 with the correct round can still dust someone and has been a nice carry gun for years.

If you only load this ammo for "just in case" in lieu of target practice, will it increase or decrease the chances of jambing?

For example, in a KEL-TEC P-3AT.

It will ruin your whole day if hit at point blank.

Still working on putting 250 flawless rounds of FMJ thru my Llama 380 - about 150 into it, no jams, etc. yet. Once the 250 have proven, then I may try a box or two of HP ammo, but in all honesty will probably trade the 380 off for something else after I'm out of my FMJ ammo...
