Recommendations for Seville?

My wife and I are starting to plan our 10-year anniversary trip to Spain for summer 2012. We did the Costa Del Sol for our honeymoon in 2002, and spent a day in Seville. We wished we had more time there, because we loved it, and we promised ourselves we'd come back.

We're looking to spend a week there, and just enjoy the city. Tourist sites are fine and all, but we'd really like to see some of the different aspects of the city, cultural life, music, etc. We'd like to stay in an apartment or condo, preferably a place with a terrace or balcony with a view, whether that be an urban square, the river, or whatever.

Any thoughts?

An easy one but the Seville Catherdral, it's one of the largest cathedrals in the world and the architecture is really *****in due to the mashup of islamic and christian influences since there was a mosque at the build site previously and they decided to keep the minaret and convert it into a belltower which is interesting because you can see exactly where they added onto the tower because of the abrupt change in style.

I remember the cathedral from our last trip there - we toured that, and the palace, where, if memory serves, the royal family still live, on the 2nd floor. My main memory of the palace is the exquisite tile work.

Chris

Just back from Turkey & I saw your post . . .

We had 3 nights in Seville in 2005. See Searching for Moors

We too really liked Sevilla. We were there mid-June & it was scorching already so AC is a must wherever you stay. The cathedral, the palace, Casa de Pilatos were the highlights. Stay as close to the Barrio Santa Cruz as possible - although driving around the barrio ain't fun. Tapas, flamenco, bullfights etc etc. And Granada is only a 3 hour drive away & Alhambra is a must.

I loved Sevilla. You can see the Muslim Alcazar, Roman ruins, and the huge gothic Christian cathedral all within walking distance of each other. I don't know another place that's history is so well preserved and so clearly exposed.
We stayed at the Hotel Dona Maria, right across the alley from the St Mary's Cathedral. There is a great bar on the roof of the hotel where it seems as if you could reach right across the alley and touch the cathedral.
If you have a car, park in one of the public lots down by the river and walk into town. Driving in Sevilla is a nightmare.
Lots of night life there - people on the streets until the wee hours, drinking and enjoying tapas.
Have a good time! It's a great city.

Good stuff so far, thanks and keep it coming!

We probably won't rent a car. We did last time, and yes, driving in Seville is a nightmare. Makes Montreal look like a drive in the country But more than that, I find you discover a city more on foot and on transit, so I'd rather do it that way.

Barrio Santa Cruz is a must! Right now I'm wearing the leather dress shoes I bought there in 2009 ;-)

Have a great time in sunny Spain!!

Cheers
