the thing that sucks about death

is you never get to see that person again.

they had a great, very, very long life, died peacefully and comfortably with family surrounding, joyful that she'll be Heaven, no doubt there.

but you'll never get to see them again.

ever.

that sucks.

You don't plan on going to Heaven?

Now THAT would suck!

I have plans, but Murphy keeps showing up.

I 'see' some close friends, and even get to 'talk' to them from time to time, but it's not the same.

I recently started thinking about life as similar to light bulbs.

They come in different shapes, sizes and colors,

All of them put out more heat than light, but some are more efficient than others

Some blow out (die) the second you plug them in, others last the average amount of time and some last a lot longer than the average,

When they're dead, you throw them in the trash.

More like a roll of toilet paper. The closer to the end you get, the faster it goes.

fwiw, people you know are always changing. Even you are not the same person you were 10 years ago, or even yesterday. But yeah, death seems to be the sharpest change of all.

A very good friend of mine died 2 years ago. The last time I was at his house, I was getting ready to leave and as I was walking to my car he called me back and asked me to come by more often. Those were the last words he said to me and it was the last time I saw him alive. I am still bothered by it. I think about him every day. I wrote a thread here titled " An old friend" that tells a little more about it if anyone is interested.

I feel for you Shaun. After my Dad passed away, I remember driving through Connecticut on a business trip, a time when I'd often call him because I was close. I couldn't do that any more. But I figured at that point that if he could hear me, he would be listening, so I had the same conversation that I'd normally have with him. Curiously the response was about the same. He never was much for a lot of conversation.

I've come to appreciate as I've gotten older that you never know when will be the last time that you talk with someone. So I always try to treat each conversation with the important people in my life with the same sincerity as if it were to be my last. That doesn't mean long profuse good byes, but rather pay attention to the person, honestly tell them my thoughts, often reinforce how much they mean to me and try to finish the conversation so that I'll have no regrets in the future.

Material things and accomplishments are nice, but personally I've come to believe that my value as a person is the impression that I leave on the people around me. If that is a good impression the last time that we meet, than I guess we're in a good place.

I have a 62yo sister that is entering the very last phase of her life. She has been living with cancer for the last six years; never was able to catch a break and get a clean scan. She used chemo to fight the tumors and has outlived the prognosticators. Last fall they had to stop as it destroyed her heart. She has shown extreme grace under fire and to this day continues to will herself on, not yet ready to go and leave her children and grand children. The process has been very peaceful, constant fatigue and sleep brings relief from anxiety........ but all you get are moments...........Sad and unfair to be denied a full life.

Isnt that the truth! Been going to far too many funerals lately, but thats what happens when you get older and others fall by the wayside.

Yeah, sometimes it's better. We do tend to remember people in a more kind way.

Sorry to hear that. I've had two old good friends pass away int he last month. One was murdered - shot in the stomach, and his house set on fire.

I lost both my grandparents within a day of one another; both in the ICU (next to one another) at the same time for different reasons, they were buried together on the same day. Doctor told my parents they were going to together and it wasn't the first time he saw this happen.....fate or a high power? Whatever the reason it seemed fitting since they were married 50 plus years....miss them everyday.
