Visual Effects and "The Walking Dead"

For those of you who liked the series "The Walking Dead" on A&E last season, it will be back. I''m in Prague with the VFX Supervisor from Stargate Studios who did the visual effects for the show. He turned me onto this Youtube video. Its a good example of how computers are used in motion picture and television, and replacing a lot of actual action and footage in general. At 2:47 in the video look carefully and you can see the nitrogen pressured piston being blown out of the cannon welded into the bottom of the GTO as it flips over. They pressure it to about 150 psi to flip it once and up to about 300 psi to do multiple flips, and varies with the weight of the vehicle of course. Where the piston flies can be dangerous, they are sometimes made of steel, but they are using hard plastic pistons turned on a lathe more and more. The old technology was black powder and a greased piece of telephone pole. Obviously, nitrogen with a pressure gauge is more reproducible with testing then measuring out black powder.

I think you can watch last seasons episodes at AETV.com. IIRC there were only six episodes last season.

It's also on Blue ray... Great series, can't wait for season 2.

masraum 05-05-2011 11:34 AM

I'd never heard of it. Sounds like I've got something to watch.

Definitely ! If you can get past the fact that it begins 100% like "28 days later" (guy wakes up from a coma, zombies galore), it's a really good show. Come to think of it, since it's based on a long standing comic, it's possible 28 days later stole from the book !! I bought the compendium book too, it's good but pretty depressing. I hope the show strays a little from it, the book can be ruthless (in fact I'm pretty sure that would not pass censorship on TV)! anyway, definitely check it out, great SFX too...

m21sniper 05-05-2011 11:51 AM

Is the book of the same name?

Sounds like i need to get that.

mca 05-05-2011 05:21 PM

Great series! Hope Breaking Bad returns soon too.

Schumi 05-05-2011 11:54 PM

Hadn't seen this before, but I stopped watching 30 seconds in because I didn't want to spoil anything for myself!

Definitely got to catch up on this show, thanks Hugh...

Right click in the video window.

Left click the 4th option: copy embed html.

Paste it here in your post.

This is what the soundstage of the future will look like. Instead of building hard set walls, they digitally drop in the background. Sorry for the crappy iPhone pic, but my regular camera battery died.

When do we replace the Smarmy actors with CGI?

True. That and other shows are the reason I *still* cannot cut the cord.

The Walking dead, Breaking bad, Mad Men, Justified... And F1+WRC.

And yes, the comic book for the walking dead is compiled into a telephone sized book you can find on amazon. it's black and white, gritty... Like I said I hope they follow that loosely, there is some stuff in there I would not wanna see on TV (about kids and babies)

Thanks for the update, Hugh. I love that show and got my wife hooked from the very first episode I had her watch when it was available on Hulu. You mentioned Stargate Studios. Are these where SGU is filmed? Any insight on that series? I'll start another thread about it so as not to hijack this one any more.

tcar 05-06-2011 09:46 AM

Mostly I watch TV on HULU,

They had the first episode of TWD only, then no more... thought it had been cancelled.

I heard they stopped showing it because it was too gruesome...

No this is a visual effects shop in Vancouver.
