I would add a day trip to colonial Williamsburg it is only a few miles from Richmond and would be lovely in Sept after the summer tourist crowds have fallen off.

You are pretty much in the center of some really excellent sights.
Charlottesville and Monticello. Go to Lexington and visit VMI and Washington and Lee. The museums are excellent. My son is working hard to get into VMI. Lexington is a neat little town with good places to eat and relax. If you golf the variety is terrific...Bryce has a nice, cheap course. Go to Richmond and tour the historic areas...the church where Lee accepted the leadership of the confederate army. Richmond also has excellent nightlife. Fredericksburg is worth the trip...standing atop Marye's Height is a profound experience if you have an interest in the Civil War. Rent a sports car, or at least a sporting car...the roads in the area are excellent. Enjoy.

Not sure how far the caverns are from Hot Springs but they are worth a visit.

There are lots of things to do in that area if you like quiet mountains, great roads, and a simpler way of life. When I need a break from the grind you can usually find me carving up a lot of those roads
