it's been exactly 30 days since i adopted this dog.
"HARRY".
been very interesting. i almost called it off after a few days. the guy was making me crazy. he had (has?) separation anxiety. we looked over his paperwork, and we found a small note. previous owner dumped him for barking..EXCESSIVELY! oh, crap. my wife is a saint. she calmed me down, and told me to give him a shot. i fixed the carpet in my truck (little effer)..and we moved forward. we started training. i have never pretended to leave my home as often as i have recently. put on shoes, grab bag and leave..come back..repeat. wife is doing the same. we crate trained him. we can be anywhere in the home, say the word "kennel", and he will trot off happily and jump in his box. we praise him everytime. i think he is coming around. he doenst eat cat turds from the box, he ignores other dogs..and is smart as a whip. and he sleeps like a rock thru the night. only two pee accidents. and he hasnt tried to kill our cats. chickens and him..they have issues. he is almost 11 years old, and must take meds for life. we trimmed 5 pounds off of him. we walk him twice a day. 4 miles total. i think my wife is slimming down too :) 30 days means our adoption fees are now not refundable. he gets to stay..hehee. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1304918122.jpg |
Hey Cliff, I have that EXACT same rug, if you ever want two you can have it.
Oh yeah, nice dog! He looks very distinguished. |
What a handsome little dog. And who hasn't tried to kill a chicken?
|
He looks a real nice dog. Yes, it does seem to work well giving them plenty of mental stimulation and tiring them out with multiple walks each day.

Cliff,
Sounds like you're doing great. The first couple of weeks of critter adoption can be, ah, er, ...trying, until they figure out the ground rules. As for chickens.. After we adopted our first dog, we moved from an apartment to a small house in a rural area. The neighbor two doors over had chickens which used to roam the back yards. One day when we returned from a walk, PJ ran around the house out of sight. When I got around the corner, he had a chicken under one paw and was pulling out tail feathers! About a half-dozen others were calmly standing around, apparently waiting their turn. I scolded the dog and reached to grab the bird carcass when it jumped up and ran off, minus its tail feathers. One bald-arsed bird. They seemed to stay closer to home after that. Good luck with your little guy. Les |
You're doing the right thing - Congrats to you both! Your patience and willingness to open your home and heart will pay itself back countless times over.

My first Airedale was named Harry. He was a rescue too. Cute little guy you have there. Be patient.

Our Daschunds get locked in the laundry room when we leave. They have a dogie door to go outside so we can be gone all day. It is amazing how they can pick up the subtle clues that we are leaving. Our male is blind, yet he still knows to mosey off the the laundry room and wait for us to leave.

Glad to hear that things are improving. Rescue dogs always seem to really want to please.
I saw this on a car the other day and thought it was cute. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-T...escued-who.jpg |
he is seriously cute.
chicks love him. i was at the dog park, and some young girl with a coon hound was seriously taken. she got all talkative with me. then harry tried to mount the hound. talk about an ice breaker. hound's name was "DUKE". pretty bad arse dog. my wife was less than thrilled. "bad Harry!" |
Maybe his nick name could be Dirty Harry.
|
and if he was from Fresno, his name would be Harry Protrusian, no doubt. :)
|
Hooray for you! That is a great story! Thank you for taking the time and energy to train this very handsome dog.
Take care, Michael |

We took her home, the first few weeks were touch and go and it almost didn't work (mainly because of me) but I swallowed my reluctance to commit and got in the game. She's my shadow now of course. I work from home and she will lay right next to me while I work and snore away all day long. If I get up, she gets up and follows. We play, we walk and she's been great for everyone. I'm more active with her around so I firmly believe that she has rescued me. |

that is a good looking dog. i don't have the patience for rescue dogs. our rescue dog lasted 3.5 years, his behavior never improved. we finally got rid of him a few months ago and found out that he was immediately adopted and started the same problems with the new adopters. we will get puppies from now on so that i can train them when they are trainable. |
My Cairn has many kills under his belt

You can choke your chickens, but I kill mine, early in the morning. Especially on the weekend before a big family getogether. Wait, what are you talking about exactly?

Oh. I see. I was thinking target practice. Out of boredom no doubt.
