GM Tansaxle oil question
The GFs Solstice has noisy clutch paks. It's a known issue and GM makes the Dealer replace the fluid with this stuff.... GM Performance 89021677 - GM Performance Oils, Fluids & Additives - Overview - SummitRacing.com
Prior to the transaxle blowing up.... Kragen has Royal Purple with the LSD additive for $18 a qt. Is this a fix or a bandaid?

Owner's manual calls for something else. The stuff from Summit is what the dealer is suggesting.
They want almost four hundred bucks for labor and fluid. $40+ a quart.....screw that. Car has only 32K on the clock. Maint schedule says 60k for rear transaxle change. Their screwup, they should cover it under the warranty.....but they won't.

Angela started a recent thread on how car makers are routinely turning down warranty claims. I don't think any company is exempt..
In your case, have you checked with any local independent shops? $400 sounds awfully steep for a rear end fluid change...

In that case, check summitt to see if they have any rear end covers that feature fill and drain plugs...
Sounds like her warranty is about gone anyway, and certainly isn't worth much.

It's the differentials, damn clutch packs fail almost every 20k miles in them. $1500 for GM to repair them so they can go out again. Additives might buy you some time, but these thing lockup while driving when they go, can be dangerous.
If you're handy with diff's you can rebuild the packs yourself for about $300, but you need to be dead on setting the carrier back up. Or get an entire diff from a Caddy CSV as they have the heavy(er) duty carriers in them, however they still go out as well. File a complaint with GM, they gave me some goodwill on we bought at auction recently. I only had to pay labor and they gave it a 12k warranty.

Couldn't find the oil capacity for the rear end....so like an idiot, I relied on the Dealer's estimate of 3 qts.
When draining, it didn't seem anywhere near that.......pumping in the Royal Purple (less than 1/3 the price of the GM approved oil, dealer price) it started to weep out the fill hole a 1.5 qts. CRAP....got to thinking, measure the old oil, about the same.....another example of how you can get hosed by the Dealer..... ![]()
