The question is...

Have the moderators lost control?

Or have they...

Lost their minds!?!

Maybe we need a new rule that anyone with 20,000 posts is instantly a Moderator...

I've had my share of run ins with moderators and in truth think they are doing a great job.

The problem with making anyone with 20K posts a moderator is that some of those people are the biggest offenders.

. . .and have been here a while.

But, no, that's not a great metric.

I am a mod on one of the other forums here, but wouldn't want that influence for PARF.

I like that people give me uninhibited counter arguments --even the really trollish lame retorts which scream "I've got nothing, so look at my painted clown-shoes..."

But you've never done that.....

Pelican OT is a form of entertainment, not a way of life (or lack of one). I think some people have a problem separating the two.

for some, OT is a form of communication. ...a bull session of current topics.

there are the lurkers, of course. ...too timid to post, read for entertainment and POV's

That's exactly right. As incredible as it seems, posting on a commercial car parts seller board really is a way of life for a handful of people here, and an incredibly all-consuming one (24/7/365, nonstop).

Those few people have a huge impact on the quality (lack of) the board, compared to how it used to be.

Then it becomes self fulfilling - as the "no lifers" here post more and more, the quality posters post less and less (or go away completely, as many have done).

The board still has some entertainment value, but it's nothing like it was in the past.

mossguy 05-12-2011 10:13 AM

Aaahhh, the good old days! :)

For one thing they don't single anyone out. They don't even point in the direction of any one person. Just a lump sum stereotype

Prolly a better idea would be make a new rule that says you aren't allowed to post anything until you have passed a certain number, say 7500 posts?
Yeah, that's makes perfect sense. Huh?

Or, perhaps just decline to take a dip into the cesspool. Don't know how many times I've typed up a response to some outlandish post and decided not to hit send. 95 percent of the time, just typing the response lets me get it out of my system.

For instance, the PC vs Mac debates that lead absolutely nowhere. SmileWavy

For the most part this is a pretty good crowd here, which is why I keep coming back. Great forum to bounce ideas/opinions/whatever off of, learn things, share experiences and get a few laughs. It's entertainment, but it's entertainment with a modicum of value - kind of like "Myth Busters". There's a nugget of value to this place once in a while and the technical knowledge is top-notch (gotten me out of many a jam...)

I wonder if RWebb got a warning for the useless idjit trollfest he threw up here yesterday.

RWebb 05-12-2011 01:28 PM

No, I didn't.

Those posts were simply a list of worthless posts in the sniper thread by Odd Job Uno. His point, and mine, was that many of the threads in OT were utter drivel (I agree with P O P that some fraction of the threads here are both diverse and worthwhile).

Based on pm's I got, some people thought it was funny, clever or maybe both -- but that some would not be able to see themselves in the mirror held up to them.

I did however, apologize to Z-man since I see he locked some of them. No intent to cause him extra work.

You say "worthless," I say, "useless."

No difference, really.

So, you think you made a worthwhile point by creating a seperate, useless/worthless thread for each of OJU's points?

You didn't. People who read his post got it and didn't need to see each point again as a seperate thread.

Those who didn't read his post also didn't need to see each point again as a seperate thread.

"Funny, clever, or maybe both?"

None of the above.

No intent to cause Z-man extra work, but you did cause him extra work.

Epic FAIL all around, Webby!!!! :D :D :D

RWebb,
I saw the humor in all those threads last night. :)

Wrong:

Post #66 is worthless on this thread.

I still can't figure out how this thread applies to OT. PARF? For sure. I browse OT all the time and, with occasional exceptions, the lady pilot thread being one, the place seems pretty peaceful to me.

I've had a lot of questions answered, learned lots of stuff I'd probably never have thought of if I hadn't looked into threads staring me in the face, and am generally entertained. I don't count Paul's speeding Bullitt posts as a problem; I think they're funny as hell the way they rile up some of the guys here who seem to take this goofy Internet banter WAY more seriously than I do.

PARF on the other hand, is a cesspool. That's why the crap posted there was segregated from OT. I'll grant that there have, on rare occasions, been worthwhile discussions that were sustained for a while, but they're the exception rather than the rule - and even most of those were ultimately dragged down into the brown stuff.

Another thing is, there really ain't that many people who post on PARF. And the handful who do are predominantly conservatives arguing with the small number of non-conservatives who go into their sand box. The cesspool would probably dry up if that minority quit going there because the majority would get bored just preaching to their choir.

I'm in the minority group and I go there just for laughs, spend more time there than on OT by far. I'll never try to sabotage a thread just for the fun of it though. But I will jump right in and have fun if a thread strikes me as outrageous from my political perspective. But even then, it's only sabotage in the eyes of those I'm disagreeing with as far as I'm concerned. I get s kick out of how troll defines dissenters who won't give up - damn trolls!!

Anyway, where's the problem here on OT?
